ABC7 Chicago reported that a 7-year-old girl was stabbed multiple times in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue Saturday and that a suspect was injured during detention. Officials have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. It remains unclear what sparked the violence in the area, which sits in the heart of one of Chatham's busiest commercial corridors.
The corner is anchored by Chatham Village Square, a 263,000-square-foot shopping center whose tenants include Nike, Walgreens, Chase Bank, and Discover Financial Services, according to Showcase.com. The plaza serves as a primary retail hub for the surrounding Chatham community, drawing steady foot traffic throughout the day.
A Crossing Near Chatham's Retail Corridor
East 87th and Cottage Grove is also a crossing near the retail center, where shoppers and people traveling through the area pass one another.
The area has seen deadly violence before. In December 2023, a 53-year-old security guard working at the same shopping center was shot and killed while intervening in a physical altercation, according to CBS Chicago. The guard died attempting to protect shoppers at the plaza.
Saturday's stabbing also follows a string of sharp-force attacks across Chatham and nearby neighborhoods this year. In June, a 48-year-old man was found stabbed to death on the 8000 block of South Ellis Avenue, roughly seven blocks from Saturday's scene, in a case where police made no immediate arrests. In September, a woman was fatally stabbed in the neck in neighboring Englewood, while a man found with a stab wound under a nearby porch was taken into custody in critical condition.
Jurisdiction and Emergency Response
The scene falls under the Chicago Police Department's 6th District, which covers Chatham and surrounding South Side neighborhoods under Commander Andre Poston and relies on Strategic Decision Support Centers for data-driven patrols. Critically injured trauma victims from Chatham are routinely routed to the Level I Adult Trauma Center at University of Chicago Medicine in Hyde Park, less than five miles north of the intersection — the South Side's first adult Level I trauma facility in nearly three decades when it opened in 2018.
Citywide, violent crime trends in 2026 have been mixed. Chicago recorded 1,264 gunshot victims through August, a 1% drop from the same period in 2025, and August's 39 homicides marked the city's lowest August total since 2011. Yet a July Council on Criminal Justice report found homicides had risen 3% during the first half of 2026 compared with the prior year, even as robberies fell 28% and carjackings dropped 27%.
No charges have been announced in connection with Saturday's stabbing, and the investigation remains active.
