A man tried to order food on foot at a Taco Bell drive-thru in Algiers late Friday night, got turned away over company policy, and allegedly responded by climbing through the window with a gun. Employees still refused to give him anything, and he fled on foot, leaving New Orleans police with an open investigation and few answers.

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating the armed robbery, which happened around 11:44 p.m. Friday in the 4300 block of General De Gaulle Drive, according to WDSU. Police say the suspect first tried to place his order on foot at the drive-thru window, only to be told by employees that walk-up orders at the window violated company policy — a rejection that apparently set the confrontation in motion.

Suspect Squeezed Through the Window With a Gun

Rather than walk away, the man allegedly climbed through the drive-thru window itself, gun in hand, and demanded food from the staff inside. Workers held firm and refused to comply despite his threats, the station reports. The suspect ultimately left the area on foot after exiting back through the window, and as of Saturday's report, the investigation remained ongoing with no word on an arrest.

A Pattern Playing Out at Drive-Thrus Nationwide

The Algiers incident isn't an isolated oddity in the fast-food world. In Houston, police searched for an armed suspect who climbed through a McDonald's drive-thru window and chased an employee inside the restaurant, according to NBC News. Surveillance footage from that case showed a suspect pointing a handgun at a female employee before jumping out of a vehicle and climbing through the window; Houston police said they were also seeking the driver of a dark green Nissan Xterra, and the motive remained unknown.

A separate episode unfolded at a Toledo Taco Bell, where police investigated a shooting after an irate customer fired a gun through the drive-thru window, per 13abc. Five workers were in the kitchen at the time; no one was hurt, though the window itself was damaged. Toledo police later released an image of that suspect and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an identification.

Where Algiers Fits Into New Orleans' Crime Numbers

The Algiers case lands amid a mixed picture for violent crime in New Orleans. WDSU has reported that armed robberies were up 6% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period the year before, even as murders were down 24% and carjackings climbed 26% over that same stretch. Those midyear numbers stand in contrast to the longer trend described by Axios New Orleans, which reported that armed robberies fell 28% from 2024 to 2025 and 70% from 2022 to 2025, with violent crime overall trending down for a third consecutive year.

Axios New Orleans has also noted that NOPD shifted to a new crime-reporting method in 2026 meant to align the department with other federal and state agencies — a change officials acknowledged would make crime appear to be rising even without an actual spike. No arrest has been announced in the Algiers case, and investigators have not released a description of the suspect or said whether anything was taken from the restaurant.
