A new bakery counter has opened at 490 Commerce Drive in Sunbury, and it carries a familiar last name. Pegasus Bread Co., owned by Marco Auddino of the family behind Auddino's Italian Bakery, has moved from wholesale-only production into a storefront serving pastries, bread, gelato and coffee straight to customers.
Sources differ on the exact opening day: according to NBC4 WCMH-TV, the shop opened Oct. 17, while 614NOW reports the official opening fell on Oct. 19. Either way, the Sunbury bakeshop is now open and welcoming customers, offering both dine-in and takeout, per NBC4's report.
Marco Auddino is the son of Michele and Rosa Auddino, who own Auddino's Italian Bakery, and he launched Pegasus Bread Co. last year as a wholesale operation selling bread out of the family's Clara Street location, the station's report notes. The move to Commerce Drive let him expand the offerings and begin serving customers directly, all while keeping the wholesale side of the business running.
A Baker's Winding Path Back Home
Auddino's path to running his own shop wasn't a straight line. He served as head of production at his family's bakery from 1997 to 2006, then relocated to Florida, per the same account. He moved back to central Ohio in 2014 and eventually returned to work at the family bakery before striking out with Pegasus Bread Co.
The new Sunbury location launched with a limited menu featuring pastries, doughnuts, cookies, cakes, gelato, bread and coffee, the station notes. According to its website, the shop plans to add pizza, Italian subs and chicken wings down the road, and 614NOW reports the eventual full menu is set to include sun buns and bagels as well.
Demand out of the gate appears to have outpaced supply. Nearly every item, from jelly-filled doughnuts to tiramisu and gelato, sold out over the opening weekend, according to 614NOW. Per Facebook, Pegasus Bread Co. wrote that it received overwhelming support on its first day and thanked Sunbury for the welcome.
What's Already on the Menu
The current Pegasus Bread Company menu lists fresh Italian breads made daily, including Italian rounds, baguettes, rolls, ciabatta, hard rolls and focaccia. Coffee drinks round out $3 espresso up to $5 cappuccinos, lattes and Americanos, while the dessert case includes gelato, granita Italian slushies and affogato.
The website lists Italian, Italian sausage, meatball and muffaletta sandwiches under “Savory Menu Coming Soon,” priced between $10 and $15. Hours currently vary and are regularly updated on the shop's Facebook page, NBC4 reports.
A Family Bakery Dating Back to 1968
Auddino's Italian Bakery itself has deep roots in central Ohio. The family opened the bakery in 1968 as a 500-square-foot retail shop on Cleveland Avenue in the Linden neighborhood, specializing in doughnuts, cakes and pastries before expanding into breads and other baked goods, according to NBC4's reporting.
The bakery relocated to its current 20,000-square-foot retail and wholesale location on Clara Street in 1990, and the family business now supplies bread, pastries and pizza dough to restaurants across central Ohio. With Pegasus Bread Co., that legacy has now stretched north into Sunbury, giving the Auddino name a second storefront for local bread lovers to walk into.
