A predawn shooting near 22nd Place and Billings Street in Aurora left one person hospitalized early Sunday, with police confirming the victim is in stable condition as investigators search for the shooter. The gunfire, reported around 1 a.m., sparked confusion online after social media inquiries raised questions about whether multiple people had been struck.
responded directly to one such inquiry Sunday morning, clarifying that only a single person was shot and injured. “Good morning, only one person was shot and injured. They are in stable condition at an area hospital. An investigation is underway to locate the suspect,” the department wrote, addressing a post that had asked whether multiple people were shot at 22nd Place and Billings around 1 a.m. No arrests have been announced, and the suspect's identity remains unknown.
A Neighborhood With a Violent History
The intersection where Sunday's shooting occurred carries some history of its own. East 22nd Avenue and Billings Street previously served as the crash site during a high-profile February 2014 police chase, when two suspects fleeing a fatal robbery shooting wrecked their vehicle there before being apprehended, according to Sentinel Colorado.
This is far from the only gun violence Aurora police have investigated in recent weeks. In mid-September, officers responded to a separate targeted shooting near South Havana Street and East Alameda Avenue that left two people hospitalized with gunshot injuries, as Hoodline previously reported. A person was injured in a shooting in an Aurora Town Center mall parking lot. A separate shooting was reported in Aurora on September 4. A 17-year-old was also charged after a shooting wounded a man at southeast Aurora apartments in September, and a girl was grazed by gunfire outside Aurora apartments as recently as Thursday.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
Despite the string of isolated shootings, Aurora's overall crime data for 2026 points sharply downward. Department figures released in July show that overall crime in Aurora dropped 10.5% during the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2025, while violent crime fell 9% citywide, according to CBS News.
The drop is even steeper in some categories. Homicides in Aurora plummeted by 59% during the first half of 2026 compared to 2025, while non-fatal shootings had dropped 21% as of mid-April, per Colorado Politics. During that same six-month stretch, Aurora officers answered more than 142,000 calls for service and executed over 4,500 arrests citywide, the outlet reported. Statewide, the trend holds too: violent crime across Colorado fell 13.3% in 2025 compared to 2024, with homicides down 29.5% statewide, according to data compiled by the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice.
Leadership in Aurora
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain, a former Los Angeles Police Department commander appointed to lead the roughly 700-sworn-officer agency in September 2024, has pushed a data-driven approach built on real-time surveillance technology, directed patrols, and hot-spot policing. He is the seventh person to lead the department in five years, per Hoodline's earlier coverage of recent Aurora shootings.
