Barbie is bringing her sneakers to the Strip. Tangram and Mattel Inc. announced that the global Barbie Run will make its United States debut in Las Vegas on March 13, 2027, with a 5K race set for Grand Prix Plaza, the massive Formula 1 venue just off the Strip.
The announcement came Wednesday, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which detailed the race's location, date and registration tiers. The Las Vegas event brings Barbie into a 5K race setting. The race will take place at Grand Prix Plaza.
Grand Prix Plaza itself is no small stage. The 300,000-square-foot, $500 million facility was built by Formula 1 parent company Liberty Media at Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane, according to LVSportsBiz, which established the venue as permanent Formula 1 infrastructure near the Strip. Outside of November race weekends, the venue operates as a year-round destination featuring a 20,000-square-foot interactive racing exhibit, a 1,650-foot electric go-kart track and motion simulators, per Travel Weekly.
Registration Opens Friday With Tiers for Kids and VIPs
Registration for the Las Vegas Barbie Run opens Friday, with full registration details posted at barbierunus.com. The event brings families and adult running enthusiasts together under one banner.
This is not Barbie's first lap. The run circuit debuted in Latin America in 2024, drawing more than 9,000 participants across São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro before a 2025 event planned for three Brazilian cities, with organizers expecting more than 15,000 participants, according to Brasília ETC, which noted the event's 3K and 6K routes, live music and brand activations. In Mexico, the run launched during Barbie's 65th-anniversary celebrations in 2024 across Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, with organizers expecting thousands of participants for 3K, 5K and 10K distances, as reported by Dónde Ir, with inclusive options for children and seniors.
Mattel's Bigger Bet on Live Experiences
The Las Vegas race fits into a much larger strategy for the toy giant. Mattel now operates a global Location-Based Entertainment portfolio spanning more than 1,300 live experiences across over 300 cities worldwide, pushing its brand IP into theme parks, waterparks and touring events, according to License Global. That international surge traces back in part to Greta Gerwig's 2023 Barbie movie, which grossed $1.448 billion at the global box office and became the highest-grossing release in Warner Bros. history, per The Numbers.
Las Vegas is already familiar territory for Mattel's experiential ambitions. The company opened the Malibu Barbie Cafe and roller rink at AREA15 in a 2025 pop-up partnership with Bucket Listers, featuring themed decor and a 1970s-style skating setup. That activation reflects Mattel's investment in physical, in-person gatherings.
Mattel's Experience-Focused Strategy
The Las Vegas debut arrives as Mattel continues to pursue location-based entertainment. The aggressive push into location-based entertainment, including the Barbie Run, represents one way Mattel is trying to generate high-margin revenue even as its core business faces headwinds.
For Las Vegas, the race adds another non-gaming draw to a tourism calendar increasingly built around mega-events.
