A 28-year-old Belle Glade woman is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge after authorities say she pulled a handgun during a street argument with a teenager and fired a shot that missed him but shattered the rear window of a nearby SUV. Keyera Burkes was also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle following the Oct. 21 incident near Southwest Sixth Street and Southwest Avenue C.
According to WPBF, investigators identified 16-year-old Isaac Hornsby III as the intended target of the gunfire. Witnesses told detectives that an argument broke out between the teen and the woman before the shot was fired, and a probable cause affidavit from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office lays out how that confrontation escalated.
Surveillance Video Shows Argument Turn to Gunfire
Surveillance footage reviewed by sheriff's detectives reportedly shows the teen physically confronting Burkes before walking away, and then shows her obtaining a handgun, pointing it toward him and firing a single shot, per investigators. A separate report from CBS12 states the footage shows the teen strike Burkes during the argument before he ran across the street, and that she then got a handgun from a man standing nearby, pointed it at him and fired once.
The affidavit also says Burkes picked up what appeared to be the spent shell casing before the man took the gun back from her, according to the same CBS12 account. The bullet missed Hornsby entirely but struck a Nissan Rogue parked nearby, shattering its rear window. Two men inside the SUV were not injured.
Charges Built on ShotSpotter, Witness IDs
The sheriff's office said its evidence included witness statements, surveillance footage, ShotSpotter technology and photo lineup identifications, the station's report notes. Two juvenile witnesses later identified Burkes as the shooter, and detectives said they found probable cause to charge her with attempted first-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
The case is now moving through the court system, though the record reviewed does not address Burkes' attorney, bond status or any plea entered so far.
Pattern of Gunfire in Belle Glade
The shooting adds to a string of violent incidents reported in the small Glades community over the past two years. In December 2024, deputies said nearly 60 rounds were fired at a woman sitting in her car during a separate Belle Glade shooting, according to CBS12. And in August, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office investigated the death of a man found with apparent gunshot wounds in Belle Glade as a homicide, as reported by The Palm Beach Post.
Another Belle Glade case ended last November with a 55-year prison sentence for a man convicted of attempted murder in a shooting involving a lawn-service truck, according to a separate CBS12 report. Florida's statute on shooting into occupied vehicles, Chapter 790 Section 19, covers gunfire directed at dwellings, buildings and vehicles among other locations, per the Florida Senate's published statute text.
