A 31-year-old Chicago man is facing robbery and aggravated felony charges after police say he beat and robbed an 82-year-old man in Belmont Cragin last October, leaving the elderly victim with a head wound that sent him to the hospital. Keiber Sandoval Mendoza was arrested Tuesday in Bridgeport and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
According to Chicago Sun-Times, police say that on the morning of Oct. 13 last year, Mendoza approached the older man in the 6000 block of West Diversey Avenue, took his property and then fled the scene. The man suffered a cut to his head in the encounter and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized, police said.
Mendoza now faces robbery and aggravated felony charges in connection with the case, per the same report.
A Case That Sat Open for Nearly a Year
The gap between the alleged October 2025 attack and this week's arrest stands out against a broader backdrop of falling robbery numbers across the city. Chicago recorded substantial declines in robbery and aggravated assault in 2025, with the steepest drops occurring that year, according to chipublicsafety.org. The same analysis found that Chicago's homicide total fell 29 percent in 2025, marking the city's lowest homicide count since 1965.
For now, what's confirmed is narrower: Mendoza faces charges tied to the single alleged robbery on West Diversey Avenue, and the 82-year-old victim's condition had stabilized after his hospital treatment. Court proceedings will determine how the case against him moves forward.
