A man who evaded Florida Highway Patrol troopers for more than two years in connection with a triple-fatal crash on State Road 60 was finally taken into custody this week in Boca Raton. Jean S. Dorisca, 48, now faces three counts of vehicular homicide tied to a July 2024 wreck that killed three people, including his own mother.
Dorisca was taken into custody Thursday in Boca Raton on an Osceola County warrant for three counts of vehicular homicide, according to WFTV. The charges stem from a July 16, 2024, crash on State Road 60 near the Polk-Osceola County line, and FHP said Dorisca attempted to pass a semi-truck in a no-passing zone and collided with oncoming traffic. That crash killed three people, including his mother, according to FHP.
Two Years Evading Arrest
FHP said Dorisca evaded arrest after the crash and was wanted for more than two years in connection with the case before he was later designated as one of the agency's most wanted fugitives, per the same account. Investigators located him at a Boca Raton residence Wednesday, and troopers returned the next day and arrested him without incident, the report notes.
Dorisca was booked into the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Detention Center and remains in custody pending his return to Osceola County, the station reports. Troopers said he faces up to 45 years in state prison if convicted on the three counts.
A Dangerous Stretch of Road
The crash that led to Dorisca's arrest happened along a section of State Road 60 that has drawn scrutiny for its safety record. From 2020 through 2024, that two-lane stretch saw 334 vehicle crashes, including nine fatal incidents, according to aroundosceola.com. The Florida Department of Transportation has been studying a 19.3-mile stretch of the road in Osceola County for possible widening to improve safety and handle future travel demands, the outlet reported.
Other deadly crashes have struck the same corridor. A separate wreck near State Road 60 and Peavine Road in Yeehaw Junction killed three people — the driver and two passengers among six people riding in a van, according to aroundosceola.com. In another case on the same road, a crash killed six people, including three women and three young children between 4 months and 3 years old, with FHP saying the driver of a Hyundai Tucson had tried to pass several vehicles by entering the eastbound lane before losing control while attempting to re-enter the westbound lane.
What Vehicular Homicide Charges Mean
Under Florida law, vehicular homicide is defined as the killing of a human being, or the killing of an unborn child by injury to the mother, caused by another person's operation of a motor vehicle in a reckless manner likely to cause death or great bodily harm, according to the Florida Senate. That statute underpins the three counts Dorisca now faces as he awaits transfer back to Osceola County to answer for the crash that, according to FHP, took his mother's life along with two others.
