Boston Children's Hospital has signed a lease to open a specialty clinic in downtown West Palm Beach, marking the first time the renowned pediatric hospital has set up shop outside the Boston area. The clinic will be housed inside the 17-story Esperanté Corporate Center, one of downtown's signature office towers.

The lease was confirmed per a Related Ross executive, according to The Palm Beach Post, which first reported the signed deal. The newspaper's report, bylined by Andrew Marra and Alexandra Clough, lays out the bare bones of the arrangement: Boston Children's Hospital signed a lease to open a specialty clinic in the tower, with no further detail yet on size, services or staffing.

The move caps months of speculation about whether the hospital would actually commit to a Florida presence. As recently as September, the hospital had not made a final decision about a move into Florida, according to WUSF, which reported the hospital was exploring downtown sites while fundraising efforts were getting organized, with some Palm Beach-area philanthropists interested in supporting the project.

From Stand-Alone Hospital Talk to a Downtown Clinic

That earlier reporting had floated something much bigger: if the Florida project moved forward, it would mark Boston Children's first stand-alone hospital outside Massachusetts, per the same WUSF report. The version that has now materialized, a specialty clinic inside an existing office tower, is a narrower footprint than that initial stand-alone hospital concept, and the available reporting does not explain what drove the change in scope.

Still, even a clinic represents new ground for a hospital that has never operated a facility beyond its home turf. The Esperanté Corporate Center, where the clinic will land, sits at 222 Lakeview Avenue and spans roughly 256,000 square feet across its 17 floors, according to property details from Related.

A Pediatric Care Market Already in Motion

Boston Children's would be entering a Palm Beach County pediatric landscape that is already shifting. Palm Beach County has one dedicated children's hospital, while the closest nonprofit children's hospital sits 53 miles away in Hollywood, the WUSF report noted. That existing hospital, Palm Beach Children's, is described as the largest children's hospital in the county, with 138 dedicated pediatric beds plus 24/7 in-house pediatric hospitalists, intensivists and neonatologists, according to the Palm Beach Health Network. The network also runs outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy rehabilitation services for kids.

Elsewhere in the county, West Boca Medical Center holds the only inpatient pediatric department in Boca Raton and the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County, per the same Palm Beach Health Network listing. HCA Florida Palms West Children's Hospital also provides pediatric services, including a pediatric emergency department, PICU and rehabilitation, according to HCA Florida Healthcare.

Cleveland Clinic Already Building Nearby

Boston Children's isn't the only out-of-town name eyeing West Palm Beach's pediatric and hospital capacity. Cleveland Clinic's planned West Palm Beach hospital, a 200-bed facility, is scheduled to open in late 2029, WUSF reported. That timeline gives the region years to absorb two major new entrants into a market long served by a smaller set of local providers.

What remains unclear is how Boston Children's downtown clinic will fit alongside those established players: no opening date, size, services, staffing details or lease terms have been disclosed beyond the signed lease itself. For now, the confirmation that Boston Children's Hospital is bringing its name to a West Palm Beach office tower is itself the news, with the operational details expected to follow.
