Boynton Beach Community High School is preparing to open the Palm Beach County School District's only choice Sports Academy, a program designed to turn students' love of athletics into a career path long before graduation. The academy is already accepting students for fall 2027, with new football-field turf, a weight room and a training room planned as part of the buildout.

According to WPTV, the academy is meant to give students opportunities to turn their passion for sports into a career rather than treating athletics as a side interest. Principal Dr. Moody Fuller told the station the idea grew out of a simple exercise in listening to students. “The idea came from just taking a look of our student interests,” Fuller said, noting that interest in sports ran especially deep among the student body.

Fuller also emphasized that the program is not just for kids who want to play. He said sports careers extend well beyond being an athlete, a point reflected in the academy's six career pathways spanning performance, culinary, hospitality, nutrition, e-sports, photography, broadcasting, turf management and sports medical science, per the station's report.

Six Pathways From the Weight Room to the Broadcast Booth

The school's own program materials flesh out what some of those pathways will look like. Boynton Beach Community High School's Choice Programs page states that beginning in fall 2027, the campus will launch the new Boynton Beach Sports Academy, creating career pathways that connect academics, athletics, technology, healthcare, media and hospitality with hands-on learning.

The district's materials describe the goal as giving students hands-on experience, industry certifications and skills that can lead directly to college, technical training or future careers. The Sports Medical Sciences Academy, for example, covers anatomy, physiology, injury prevention, rehabilitation, physical therapy, biomechanics and recovery, according to the same school page. That program currently lists a 2.75 GPA as an eligibility requirement for applicants.

On the media side, the Sports Media and Broadcasting Academy is built around photography, videography, broadcasting, graphic design and digital content creation, the school's page notes. Sports Turf Management is also listed among the offerings, though it's marked as “coming soon” rather than fully up and running.

Turf, Weight Room and a Spring Groundbreaking

Facility upgrades are central to the rollout. The school's athletic plans include new turf on the football field alongside a new weight room and training room, WPTV reported. School officials said they expect to break ground on the stadium this spring, and are weighing whether to start weight-room construction as soon as possible to keep pace with the academy's launch timeline.

Those involved in the project say the goal is to have visible progress by the time students arrive for the academy's first year. “We have something to show fall of '27,” according to the school's comments to the station, underscoring that facilities and curriculum are meant to be ready together rather than curriculum coming first and buildings following years later.

How Families Can Apply

Because the Sports Academy is a district choice program, admission runs through Palm Beach County's standard Choice and Career Academy process rather than normal school zoning. The Palm Beach County School District states that all Choice and Career Academy programs require a Choice application and selection through a Choice lottery process, and that these programs are open to students both inside and outside the county.

The district's Choice application window for the 2027-2028 school year runs from October 8 through December 4, 2026, per the district's own posting. Students applying to a program that requires an audition are scheduled for that audition by the school to which they've applied, and eligible applicants — those who earn a qualifying audition score and meet any academic requirements — are then entered into a random lottery selection, according to the district's application and audition process guidelines.

Career-focused sports programming has been drawing attention elsewhere in recent months, though the comparisons are limited. In Texas, Longview ISD announced an e-sports arena intended to give students experience in competitive gaming, digital media and live event production, as reported by FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. Closer to home, West Florida High School's e-sports program was described in a May report from WEAR-TV as building skills tied to high-tech careers, with the outlet noting the program ranked in the top eight in the country at the time.

For now, Boynton Beach Community High School, located in Boynton Beach, Florida, remains focused on its own build-out — layering new facilities onto a curriculum meant to carry students from the weight room into careers in medicine, media, hospitality and beyond.
