A Brentwood business owner has pleaded guilty to a federal tax crime after prosecutors say he skipped out on nearly two million dollars in employee tax payments over almost a decade. Thomas William Jones, 59, admitted to one count of failing to collect and pay taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, tied to his ownership of a Franklin software consulting company.
Jones pleaded guilty Sept. 1, according to WZTV, which reported that he owned and operated Alternative Solutions Consulting Corp., described as a software consulting company based in Franklin. Federal prosecutors said that from 2014 through 2023, Jones failed to file required forms reporting his employees' wages and did not make the employment-tax payments owed to the IRS.
The station reported that the total amount of taxes Jones failed to collect and pay was no more than $1,975,964.24, spanning nearly a decade of alleged noncompliance. That figure covers unpaid employment taxes tied directly to the Franklin company's payroll obligations during that period, per the same account.
Sentencing Set for January 2027
Jones' sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2027, and he faces up to five years in prison, the station noted. A judge will determine Jones's sentence at the hearing, scheduled less than three months after Oct. 20, 2026.
The willful failure to collect or pay over tax is addressed under 26 U.S.C. § 7202, the federal statute covering this type of offense.
Part of a Broader Enforcement Push
The Brentwood case was folded into a larger nationwide tax-enforcement announcement, the station reported, with actions against 76 defendants across the country tied to more than $490 million in intended losses. That broader context underscores the scale of the federal crackdown Jones' case fell under, though the Franklin company's unpaid taxes represent a much smaller slice of that total.
