A 29-year-old man from the Bronx is just days away from finishing a walk across the entire country, having covered 2,577 miles on foot since leaving New York for San Francisco. Chantz Rivera typically logs 15 to 30 miles a day — more than a marathon's worth of distance on his biggest pushes — and says the trip has been about finding freedom and experiencing something new.
Rivera set out from the Gun Hill Houses in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx on May 31, 2026, carrying essential gear and only $250 in cash, according to the Bronx Times. He grew up in that public housing complex with his father and brother before walking away from the only home he'd known. Per KRON4, Rivera was born and raised in New York and had barely traveled before this — a week in Florida at 18 and a weekend trip to Washington, D.C. around age 24 or 25 were about the extent of it.
The decision to walk thousands of miles instead of just moving on with his life wasn't random. Rivera had tried to enlist in the U.S. Army earlier in 2026 but was turned away over a past record of misdemeanor arrests tied to selling marijuana as a teenager, the Bronx Times reports. He'd worked a string of odd jobs after high school, and the military rejection closed off one route toward reinvention just as another personal ordeal was weighing on him.
A Custody Fight That Reshaped His Path
That ordeal centered on his eight-year-old daughter. Rivera learned she was his around 2021 or 2022; his daughter had been in foster care for several years, according to the same Bronx Times report. Rivera said her mother took him to court for a paternity test. The Bronx Times described Rivera as heartbroken amid the ensuing custody battle and court visits; his father said his son had experienced trauma related to the custody battle. As he put it to KRON4, he wanted to see more of the world and believed the trip would carry mental and spiritual benefits.
Documenting the trip under the handle @yo.mula, Rivera initially drew internet harassment, with some calling him a “mad man,” before growing an online following that began offering real help, according to Hell Gate. He posted daily TikTok updates. KRON4 reports that followers have since offered him free housing, haircuts and even a pair of shoes, and that people in almost every big city along the way have stepped up with support.
Crossing the Rockies and Closing In on the Coast
Crossing the Rockies and Closing In on the Coast Rivera has described the Rocky Mountains as an upcoming challenge on his more than 2,500-mile route. Along the way he has posted daily updates to TikTok and described natural rainbows and mountain views as memorable. To support travel and living expenses, Rivera launched a GoFundMe campaign called “Support My Journey!” He has showered at truck stops, pitched a tent in parking lots and sometimes slept on park benches; a stranger once offered him a motel room.
Per KRON4, Rivera is now just days from reaching San Francisco and plans to spend at least a week there as a tourist, staying in a motel or hotel while he checks out the city and its beaches.
Part of a Bigger Walking Moment
Rivera's trek lands amid a notable stretch of cross-country walking stories. In August, Irish adventurer Fergus Farrell was scheduled to set off from Brooklyn toward Los Angeles on August 22, 2026, to raise awareness for spinal injuries, as Hoodline previously reported.
The idea of walking coast to coast is itself over a century old. In 1910, John Ennis undertook a transcontinental walk, with Edward Payson Weston involved in a rivalry with him.
