Several cars riddled with bullets turned a quiet stretch of New Jersey Avenue in northwest Atlanta into an active crime scene before sunrise on Tuesday. Officers responded to the area around 3:30 a.m. and found the damaged vehicles, and a man was loaded into an ambulance and taken from the scene as the investigation got underway.
Scene Remains Murky as Police Stay Quiet
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, officers were investigating several cars that appeared to have been struck by bullets on New Jersey Avenue. A crew from the station was on hand and observed the man being taken from the scene by ambulance, though his condition and whether he was connected to the investigation were not known. Police had not released further details about what happened or when it occurred, leaving neighbors and onlookers with more questions than answers.
It is unclear how many vehicles were damaged, who owns them, or whether anyone fired the shots from inside a car or from somewhere nearby. The lack of information from investigators means the basic shape of the incident, including any possible motive or suspect, remains unknown for now.
A Pattern of Shot-Up Cars Across Northwest Atlanta
The New Jersey Avenue scene follows a separate, previously reported shooting on Howell Mill Road near Chattahoochee Avenue that left two men injured, according to WSB-TV. In that case, a 25-year-old man was shot in the arm and was expected to recover, while a 31-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was listed in critical condition. Officers at that scene found numerous shell casings in the roadway along with gunfire damage to nearby vehicles, including a bullet hole through the front hood of a car parked at an auto shop.
Investigators in that earlier case believed the Howell Mill Road shooting might be connected to a bullet-riddled Kia sedan found on Peters Street and a burned vehicle discovered on Detroit Avenue. Atlanta police Lt. Christapher Butler said at the time that it looks like they’re probably looking at one shooter, but added that investigators were still piecing the ballistics together. No suspects had been identified and no arrests had been announced in that investigation, the outlet reported.
Violent Crime Trends Offer Mixed Picture
The uncertainty surrounding these scenes comes even as citywide numbers point to an overall decline in several categories of violent crime this year. Atlanta reported 16 homicides between January 1 and March 31, 2026, compared with 25 during the same period in 2025, per USA Today. Rape cases and robberies also dropped during that stretch, falling from 25 to 21 and from 155 to 117, respectively, the outlet reported.
Aggravated assaults moved in the opposite direction, climbing from 639 cases in the first quarter of 2025 to 773 in the same period this year, according to the same report. That single rising category underscores that even as some forms of violence ease citywide, gunfire incidents like the one on New Jersey Avenue continue to crop up without immediate explanation. Police had not released further details about what happened or when it occurred on New Jersey Avenue as of Tuesday morning.
