A 29-year-old Campbell, Ohio woman is wanted by Sharon police after allegedly driving across the state line and opening fire on her ex-boyfriend's current girlfriend on a residential street, with two children in her car at the time. Mandashia Nataia Young remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous following the shooting, which happened just after noon on the 200 block of Mesabi Street.
Sharon Chief of Police Edward Stabile confirmed to WPXI that officers responded to a shots-fired call on the Mesabi Street block Sunday, where a suspect fired at a victim before fleeing the scene. According to The Herald, police say Young pulled up in a black Volvo sedan, drew a pink pistol from a beige backpack in the trunk, pointed it at the victim and fired once. No one was struck by gunfire, but police recovered a spent shell casing just south of the alleged shooting location.
Surveillance Video Captures the Confrontation
The newspaper's account, drawn from the police investigation, describes video surveillance showing the black Volvo pulling onto Mesabi Street around noon. Young reportedly got out of the car and chased the victim before returning to her trunk, then reached into a bag, looked back at the victim, raised her hand and fired. Police told the paper that smoke or gunpowder could be seen coming from Young's raised hand in the footage.
The victim told police she is currently seeing the father of one of Young's children, and that while she and Young had fought in the past, the two had no recent problems. Police say Young had two children in the car with her at the time of the shooting.
A Short Drive Across State Lines
A Short Drive Across State Lines Investigators say a black car registered to Young was in Campbell, Ohio, 24 minutes before the shooting on Mesabi Street, according to the police account relayed by the paper. Campbell sits roughly 14 miles west of Sharon, a drive of about 20 to 25 minutes across the Ohio–Pennsylvania border, according to Distance Between. Mahoning County, Ohio court archives reviewed by Vindy Archives show that civil or legal proceedings involving an individual named Mandashia Young were recorded in the local court system back in June 2018.
Charges Carry Decades of Potential Prison Time
Young faces charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, and reckless endangerment, per the police account. Under Pennsylvania statute 18 Pa.C.S. § 1102(c), a conviction for attempted criminal homicide carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in state prison when no serious bodily injury results, or up to 40 years if serious bodily injury is inflicted, according to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Because no one was hit by gunfire in this case, the lower maximum would apply if Young is convicted.
Aggravated assault under 18 Pa.C.S. § 2702 is classified as either a first-degree felony carrying up to 20 years or a second-degree felony carrying up to 10 years, depending on whether serious bodily injury or a deadly weapon was involved. Carrying a concealed firearm without a valid license under 18 Pa.C.S. § 6106 is generally a third-degree felony punishable by up to seven years, while recklessly endangering another person under 18 Pa.C.S. § 2705 is graded as a second-degree misdemeanor carrying up to two years. Taken together, the cumulative felony and misdemeanor charges leave Young facing substantial prison exposure if she is caught and convicted.
Police Warn Public Not to Approach
Sharon police believe Young is armed and dangerous and have asked that no one other than law enforcement attempt to approach or catch her. Chief Stabile has served with the Sharon Police Department since 2000, was appointed chief in December 2017, and has sat on the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team since 2005, according to the City of Sharon.
In August, Hoodline reported that an all-day search followed a non-fatal shooting at Willow Village Apartments on Sterling Avenue, leading to attempted homicide and firearm charges against a 20-year-old suspect. The following month, an attempted homicide fugitive wanted out of Butler County was captured on South Myers Avenue after trying to flee officers from a second-story roof, as Hoodline also reported at the time. Young remains unaccounted for as the search continues.
