A car slammed into the U.S. Post Office at 825 South Church Street in Murfreesboro at 11:14 a.m. Monday, injuring the driver and leaving fire crews scrambling to keep the building from further damage. The woman behind the wheel was parked in front of the post office when she unintentionally drove forward into the structure.
The crash prompted a heavy response from Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department, according to wgnsradio.com, which reported that the driver was elderly and had not intended to lurch into the building. Crews treated her on scene for non-life-threatening injuries before Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services transported her to a hospital for observation, per the same report. WSMV likewise confirmed that one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
Crews Rush to Stabilize the Damaged Structure
With the building's integrity in question, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue crews moved quickly to stabilize it by erecting temporary structural supports known as shores, the station's report states. Fire personnel coordinated directly with Building Codes officials to determine the proper placement of those supports before the work could begin.
The response drew a significant lineup of specialized apparatus, including Ladder 1, Rescue 4, Structural Collapse Rescue, Safety 1, Safety 2, Battalion Chief 2 and Car 120, according to the same account. The scale of the equipment sent to the scene underscores how seriously crews treated the risk of structural damage after the impact.
Post Office Stays Open Despite Limited Access
Even with the shoring work underway, the post office has remained open to Rutherford County customers, though patrons currently face limited access while the situation is addressed, per Rutherford Source. It is not yet known how long those restrictions will remain in place or whether further repairs could affect operations down the line.
