A woman was left with life-threatening injuries and a man was hurt in a shooting that shut down a major central Phoenix intersection Saturday afternoon. First responders were called around 12:30 p.m. to the area of Thomas Road and 23rd Avenue after reports of gunfire, leaving investigators to piece together what happened as the woman fights for her life in a local hospital.
Phoenix police found a woman suffering from life-threatening injuries and a man with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at the scene, according to azfamily.com. The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while the man is expected to recover. Investigators have not released details about what led up to the shooting or how the two victims are connected, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Detectives closed the intersection to traffic as they worked the scene. ABC15 Arizona also reported that two people were injured in the shooting, matching the account of a man and a woman hurt near the busy central Phoenix corner.
No Suspects, No Motive Yet
Authorities described the shooting as an isolated incident and said no suspects were in custody as of Saturday. Police have not offered a possible motive, and the investigation into what triggered the gunfire is ongoing. Anyone with information has been asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at (602) 262-6151.
The shooting adds to a string of recent gun violence incidents across the Valley. A shooting near 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road left two people wounded, according to ABC15, while a separate shooting near 39th Avenue and Van Buren Street left one person critically injured and a suspect on the run, as reported by 12news.com.
Citywide Violent Crime Trends
Despite the steady drumbeat of individual shootings, Phoenix's broader crime data have been trending downward. Phoenix police investigated 84 homicide cases from January through September 2025, down from 111 during the same period in 2024 and 137 in 2023, the same azfamily.com report noted. Total violent crime citywide was also down by more than 1,000 incidents compared with 2024, according to the report.
Those figures offer little comfort to the victims of Saturday's shooting or their families, and police have released no further details about the condition of the two victims beyond their initial hospitalization. The investigation remains active, with detectives continuing to work the closed intersection for clues about what set off the gunfire.
