A Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder nearly four years after a 55-year-old man was fatally stabbed on the South Side, with police saying the suspect was tracked down in Hawaii and taken into custody as he arrived back at O’Hare International Airport. Nasir Reed, 25, faces one felony count in connection with the stabbing death, which happened in the Chatham neighborhood on December 31, 2022.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the 55-year-old victim was stabbed in the chest in the 300 block of West 87th Street at about 4:20 p.m. that day. He was rushed to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. At the time, police described the attack as having been carried out by an unknown offender, leaving the case unsolved for years.
A Break in the Case, Thousands of Miles Away
Police said Reed was eventually located in Hawaii and extradited back to Chicago, according to the same report. He was arrested Saturday in the 10000 block of West O’Hare Street, inside O’Hare International Airport, as he came back into the city. The station’s report notes that the case had gone unresolved since the stabbing nearly four years ago.
A separate account from WGN-TV adds that Reed was taken into custody at O’Hare by U.S. Marshals that same Saturday, underscoring the multi-agency effort involved in bringing him back to face the charge.
What Comes Next
Reed is due in court Monday for a detention hearing, per the original report. The information in the case was attributed to the Chicago Police Department, and further details about what led investigators to Hawaii, or what connection — if any — existed between Reed and the victim, have not been released.
