A child was hit by a car shortly before 7 a.m. Friday near Campbellton Road and Camp Ground Road in southwest Atlanta. The child was taken to a hospital and was alert and breathing, and police say the investigation remains ongoing.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Atlanta police have not said whether the driver will face charges in connection with the collision. Details about the child, the driver or the vehicle involved have not been released, and investigators have not disclosed what led up to the crash.
A Corridor With A Troubled Recent History
This is not the first time this stretch of roadway has made headlines. In a separate incident, Atlanta police responded to a collision involving a pedestrian near the same intersection of Campbellton and Camp Ground roads on a Sunday morning, in which the driver stayed at the scene, the station's report noted. That crash reportedly left the pedestrian dead, though no further information was released at the time, per the same account.
Campbellton Road has drawn increasing scrutiny for its safety record. Five people walking or biking were killed on the corridor between January 2025 and June 2026, according to Propel ATL. The advocacy group also cited discussion from a Fatal Crash Review Commission meeting noting that three of the nine people killed in Atlanta during the first three months of 2026 died on Campbellton Road alone.
A String Of Fatal Crashes
The timeline documented by Propel ATL reads like a grim ledger. A 68-year-old pedestrian was killed on Jan. 30, 2025, followed by a 39-year-old pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run less than a month later, on Feb. 24, 2025. The pattern continued into 2026, with a 26-year-old pedestrian killed on Feb. 12 and a 65-year-old pedestrian killed by an impaired driver on March 28. A 65-year-old bicyclist was then struck and killed by a delivery truck on June 9, 2026, rounding out the toll the group has tracked.
Citywide, Atlanta averages 79 people killed by car drivers each year, based on the five-year average reflected in the city's Vision Zero dashboard, Propel ATL reported. The Atlanta Department of Transportation has said it developed an online dashboard to track serious injuries and fatalities on city roads to help guide Vision Zero decision-making.
Proposed Fixes For Campbellton Road
City officials have floated changes for the corridor. The Atlanta City Council has described a proposed Campbellton Road Street Smart Corridor project that would include resurfacing, operational and safety improvements, pedestrian amenities, streetscaping, ADA-compliant sidewalks, drainage improvements and signalization technology upgrades. ATLDOT has also announced a public information open house to discuss the design of what it calls the Campbellton Road Complete Street.
For now, the investigation into Friday morning's crash continues, with Atlanta police saying only that the child was alert and breathing after being taken to the hospital and that it remains unclear whether the driver will face any charges.
