A Cincinnati man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the 2021 shooting death of a 27-year-old father in the Kennedy Heights neighborhood, closing out one piece of a case investigators once described as a targeted attack. Kameron Scott, 32, admitted to involuntary manslaughter, having weapons while under disability, and improper discharge of a firearm, and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
According to FOX19, Scott and co-defendant Corey Ringer, 35, were accused of fatally shooting Ryan Casey, 27, in a killing investigators called a targeted attack. Cincinnati Police District Two officers responded around 9:15 a.m. on September 3, 2021, to the 3600 block of Northdale Place, where they found Casey dead from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Greater Cincinnati/N. Kentucky Crime Stoppers. The case was logged as homicide number 21-H-58, per the same release.
Scott and Ringer were indicted in July 2022 on two counts of murder and one count of having weapons under disability, FOX19 reported. By agreeing to plead guilty to the lesser charges, Scott avoided the 15-years-to-life exposure that a murder conviction would have carried, and instead accepted a fixed seven-year term.
What the Plea Deal Actually Covers
The charges Scott admitted to each carry their own statutory weight under Ohio law. Involuntary manslaughter stemming from an underlying felony is a first-degree felony under Ohio Revised Code Section 2903.04, carrying a maximum of up to 11 years in prison. Having weapons while under disability is a third-degree felony under Section 2923.13, punishable by up to 36 months, while improperly discharging a firearm into an occupied structure is a second-degree felony under Section 2923.161, carrying up to eight years.
Before accepting a plea like Scott's, judges in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court are required to conduct a formal colloquy confirming the plea is entered knowingly, intelligently, and voluntarily, per the Supreme Court of Ohio. That process requires defendants to formally acknowledge they are waiving their right to a jury trial. Scott was sentenced in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas.
Co-Defendant's Trial Still Ahead
Ringer, Scott's co-defendant, has not resolved his case and is scheduled to stand trial beginning January 25, 2027, FOX19 reported. The dates are about 112 days apart, with Ringer still facing the original murder charges from the 2022 indictment.
The shooting unfolded in Kennedy Heights. Residents have noted the street's multi-family apartment complexes have seen past police responses tied to local crime concerns, per discussion on Reddit.
