The case involves an alleged vehicle chase and shooting, according to RiverBender.com.
Five Felony Counts
Prosecutors charged Vasser with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, and defacing identification marks on a firearm.
In Illinois, Class X is the most serious felony classification short of first-degree murder. A Class X conviction carries a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years with no chance of probation or conditional discharge, according to DRD Law. Some Class X offenses can carry extended terms of up to 60 years, per Covert Legal.
Repeat-Offender Firearm Charge
The firearm possession charge is a repeat-offender charge.
The aggravated discharge of a firearm charge, which applies to shots fired at an occupied vehicle, is a Class 1 felony carrying four to 15 years in prison, according to the Law Office of Clyde Guilamo. A charge of defacing identification marks on a firearm is a Class 3 felony under 720 ILCS 5/24-5(b), as outlined by Combs Waterkotte.
Pretrial Detention
A pretrial detention petition can turn on whether clear and convincing evidence shows that no condition or combination of conditions can mitigate a real and present safety threat to a victim or the public, a standard discussed in a Justia Law case.
Collinsville is in southwestern Illinois. Madison County's Criminal Division is located at the Criminal Justice Center in Edwardsville. As with all people charged, Vasser is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
This case follows a February shooting investigation that was followed by an I-70 pursuit.
