A cult-favorite New York Thai seafood restaurant is crossing state lines for the first time, and Wynwood is getting the honor. Fish Cheeks, the seafood-driven Thai spot known for family-style curries and whole-fish platters, plans to open its first location outside New York City in Wynwood in late February 2027.
The expansion was first reported by Time Out, which notes the Miami outpost will be the largest Fish Cheeks location yet, with larger presentations served alongside familiar dishes from the New York menu. It is also the subject of a report from the Miami New Times, which covered the announcement as the restaurant's debut Florida location. Fish Cheeks was founded in 2016 by 55 Hospitality, the group led by partners Jennifer Saesue and Chat Suansilphong, who are also the ones bringing the concept to Miami.
According to Fish Cheeks' own site, the founding team also included chef Ohm Suansilphong and Pranwalai Kittirattanawiwat, who built the original restaurant around the regional Thai food they grew up eating, per Fish Cheeks. The original location opened on Bond Street in NoHo in 2016 before the brand expanded to Williamsburg in 2025, and it currently operates both of those New York locations. Space NY, the design firm behind the original Fish Cheeks and its Brooklyn sister location, is also designing the Wynwood space.
A Menu Built Around Seafood, Not Pad Thai
Fish Cheeks has built its reputation on what it won't serve as much as what it will: the restaurant has proudly established itself as a pad-Thai-free zone, according to Edible Manhattan, leaning instead into regional Thai cooking. The New York menu includes a southern-style coconut crab curry made with housemade curry paste and a whole steamed branzino topped with cilantro, culantro, lime and bird's-eye chiles, alongside crispy, spicy Zabb chicken wings as a signature dish.
In Wynwood, that same seafood-forward sensibility will travel south, with the Miami menu expected to feature Coconut Crab Curry, Zabb Wings and whole-fish preparations built around locally sourced Florida seafood, per the Time Out report. Specific Florida seafood species or suppliers have not been identified in the announcement. The restaurant has consistently prioritized seafood and regional curries meant for sharing over more familiar dishes like pad Thai.
A Design Blending Thai Roots With Miami Flair
The Wynwood space is expected to mix traditional Thai architectural elements with the geometry of Miami Art Deco, wrapped in colors drawn from Wynwood's artistic surroundings, Time Out reports. That approach echoes Space NY's earlier work on the Bond Street original and its Brooklyn expansion, giving the Miami project continuity with the brand's New York roots while adapting to its new neighborhood.
Chef Dustin Everett Takes the Helm
Leading the Miami kitchen will be Executive Chef Dustin Everett, who began his career in New Orleans before moving to New York City in 2010. Everett went on to serve as executive chef at Momofuku Ssäm Bar for four years and later cooked at Pig & Khao, where he worked with Thai and Filipino techniques, according to Fish Cheeks' own staff bio.
Fish Cheeks has picked up notable recognition in New York, including a two-star review from Pete Wells in The New York Times and spots among New York Magazine's best Thai restaurants and Eater's essential New York dining lists, per the restaurant. The Miami expansion also follows growth elsewhere within 55 Hospitality, whose portfolio includes Bangkok Supper Club and allergen-free Bub's Bakery, as noted by Time Out.
No exact opening date, address or reservation details have been announced for the Wynwood location beyond the late-February 2027 timeframe. For now, Miami diners curious about the coconut crab curry and whole-fish platters that built Fish Cheeks' following will have to wait for more specifics as the opening approaches.
