A man was hurt after gunfire broke out in Southeast D.C. back in August, and now, 55 days later, police are asking the public to help identify several people caught on surveillance camera who may know something about what happened. The Metropolitan Police Department released images and video this week, hoping someone recognizes a face.
According to Shore News Network, the footage shows individuals described only as persons of interest — not people who have been charged with any crime. Police-related evidence indicates Seventh District officers responded to a call for the sounds of gunshots in the 1700 block of W Street Southeast at approximately 2 a.m. on August 23, 2026, according to information attributed to the Metropolitan Police Department, though the department's full public release was not independently available to confirm those details at a higher confidence level.
Separately, WJLA reported that officers responded to the 1900 block of 16th Street SE at approximately 8:35 p.m. that same day for a report of a shooting, where they found a man who was conscious and breathing and suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and EMS transported him to a local hospital for treatment, per that outlet's account. It is not established whether this incident and the W Street report describe the same shooting.
Conflicting Accounts on Arrests
The two accounts diverge sharply on one key point. The Shore News Network report states that the Metropolitan Police Department had not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting as of its persons-of-interest appeal. WJLA, however, reported that police stopped and arrested three people in connection with the shooting on the day it happened. The evidence does not clarify whether those reported arrests came before or after the later public appeal for help identifying people in the footage, or whether the people arrested were the same individuals shown in the surveillance images.
What is consistent across the reporting is that an adult man suffered a laceration caused by bullet fragments and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The Metropolitan Police Department has not disclosed the severity of his injuries, and it has not explained how the gunfire reached him.
Detectives Seek Public's Help, Offer Reward
The investigation remains active, with detectives seeking information both about the gunfire itself and the identities of the people captured on camera. Police have asked residents to review the released footage and contact detectives if they recognize anyone depicted in it.
To sweeten the appeal, the Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible for a crime in the District. Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099 or text a tip to 50411. Police have also urged people with information not to approach or confront anyone shown in the footage, leaving that task to investigators as the case continues.
