A person was shot and killed late Sunday night on a quiet residential street in Decatur, and by Monday police still had not said whether a suspect was in custody or what sparked the gunfire. The shooting unfolded in the 1600 block of Treasure Cove, a stretch of DeKalb County that a nearby resident described as the kind of place where you don't expect to hear gunshots while making dinner.
According to Atlanta News First, police confirmed at least one person died in the shooting, and investigators have not released the victim's identity. Officers have also declined to say whether a motive has been established or whether anyone is in custody, according to the outlet's report.
Miranda Poore, who lives nearby, told FOX 5 Atlanta that she was in the middle of cooking dinner for her three children, ages 13, 5 and 4, when she heard several gunshots ring out. She said she told the kids to get down before calling 911, and that she saw a black car driving down the street without its headlights on.
Bullet-Riddled Vehicle Towed From the Scene
Investigators spent part of Sunday focused on a vehicle found at the scene that had been hit by gunfire multiple times. Atlanta News First reported that police zeroed in on a silver sedan riddled with bullet holes, while FOX 5 Atlanta reported that investigators towed a silver Nissan with multiple bullet holes, along with a white pickup truck, from the shooting scene.
FOX 5 Atlanta reported that its reporter and a photojournalist responded to the scene and observed a medical examiner present on Sunday. Marc Teichner, who authored the station's report, wrote that DeKalb County police have not released many details about the shooting, including the identity of the person killed or any possible suspects.
A Second DeKalb Shooting Raises Unanswered Questions
DeKalb County police also responded to a separate shooting on Emerald Lake Drive, just a few miles from Treasure Cove, around the same time Sunday. Per the station's account, police have not said whether that incident and the Treasure Cove shooting are connected, nor have they provided information about what happened or whether anyone was injured on Emerald Lake Drive.
Emerald Lake Drive has drawn police attention before. In August 2024, DeKalb County officers investigated a shooting at a home in the 3900 block of that street, according to fox5atlanta.com. Officers at that time found two people shot in the home's basement; both were rushed to an area hospital, where they died. Investigators tracked suspects in that case to a home about 10 miles away on Rockey Valley Drive, where one suspect was taken into custody; the other was arrested nearby, the outlet reported.
No connection between the 2024 Emerald Lake Drive case and Sunday's shootings has been established, and police have not indicated that the two incidents are related in any way. Both the Treasure Cove shooting and the nearby Emerald Lake Drive incident remain under investigation, and officers have not released additional details about either case.
This remains a developing story, and details including the victim's identity, a possible motive, and whether anyone has been arrested may change as DeKalb County police continue their investigation.
