A 56-year-old man driving a Dodge Ram pickup was killed and a 44-year-old woman riding with him was airlifted in critical condition after their truck careened off Sunset Boulevard in Carmel late Friday night, overturning and plummeting down a steep embankment. Nearby homeowners heard the crash and called authorities, setting off a multi-agency rescue effort that took 45 minutes just to free the two trapped occupants from the wreckage.
Carmel Police reported Monday that the driver was killed in the single-vehicle crash, according to Mid Hudson News. Authorities have withheld the victim's identity pending notification of next of kin. The vehicle went out of control near Sunset Boulevard, a residential street that connects directly to Route 6 in Putnam County and sits on hilly terrain between Drewville Road and Colonel Glenn Drive, according to a Redfin listing describing the area's geography.
At least one occupant was trapped in the vehicle. The 44-year-old woman suffered severe trauma and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where she was admitted in critical condition. The report notes she was riding as a passenger when the truck overturned.
A 45-Minute Fight to Free Two Trapped Occupants
Freeing the pair from the mangled pickup required a coordinated response from several local agencies. The Carmel Fire Department, the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and two Empress Putnam paramedics all responded to the scene, per the same account. Firefighters spent 45 minutes stabilizing the vehicle and extricating both occupants while EMS personnel provided patient care.
The Carmel Fire District is volunteer-run, according to the Carmel Fire District. In August, Hoodline reported on a head-on Route 52 crash in Lake Carmel that trapped a driver, who was extricated.
State Police Investigation Continues
State Police and the Troop K Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to the Sunset Boulevard crash and are continuing to investigate. No further details on the cause of the crash — whether tied to speed, road conditions, or mechanical failure — have been released.
The surviving passenger was flown to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
Speed and Traffic Safety
Statewide, speed and control loss remain leading factors in fatal collisions. New York recorded 34,042 police-reported speed-related crashes in 2024, resulting in 315 fatalities and more than 12,000 injuries, according to traffic safety data cited by New York State Police in September.
No updates on the surviving passenger's condition or the official cause of the Sunset Boulevard crash have been released as the state police investigation continues.
