A reported theft at Macy’s Men inside Miami International Mall spiraled into a police chase this week after officers say the driver of a black Lincoln Navigator led them through the mall’s crowded perimeter road and then rammed a marked patrol vehicle. Doral police say the chase ended only when the SUV became boxed in by traffic, and that officers recovered 36 stolen credit cards and three checks tied to the men inside.
Call to Macy’s Men Turns Into a Chase
Officers responded to Macy’s Men at the mall around 6:05 p.m. Tuesday for a reported theft in progress, according to NBC6 South Florida. When officers arrived, they found two men in the front seats of a black 2024 Lincoln Navigator, and when they issued verbal commands to detain the pair, the driver, identified in the arrest report as Stephon Corbett, accelerated away instead of complying, the station reported.
Police said Corbett then drove at a high rate of speed along the mall’s perimeter road, an area thick with both vehicle and pedestrian traffic at that hour. According to the same report, Corbett deliberately drove the SUV into a marked Doral Police vehicle, damaging the cruiser’s push bar in the process before continuing to flee.
Passenger Accused of Tossing Items From Moving SUV
As the chase continued, police said the passenger, identified as Gregory Edwards, was seen throwing mail from the moving SUV. Telemundo 51’s Spanish-language account described the passenger as throwing something from the moving vehicle without specifying that the items were mail, leaving a discrepancy in how the two outlets characterized what Edwards discarded.
The pursuit came to an end when the Lincoln got stuck in heavy traffic on the mall’s perimeter road near La Carreta. Corbett and Edwards initially refused commands to exit the SUV before officers took both men into custody around 6:12 p.m., per the NBC6 account, which first reported the sequence of events from Doral police.
Cards, Checks and a Blunt Admission
The chase traced back to a Macy’s loss prevention officer who had reportedly been watching a man make several purchases at Finish Line and in the suits department before notifying police. Investigators said they ultimately recovered 36 credit cards and three checks discarded from the vehicle, none of which bore either suspect’s name, according to the station’s reporting.
Edwards admitted to using a victim’s credit card and, per the same account, told detectives that his job was just to swipe. NBC 6 also shared video of the incident on Facebook.
