A man was pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday after his Volkswagen sedan left a curve on Antioch Pike near McCall Street in South Nashville and struck a street sign and retaining wall. Emergency crews responded shortly after 12:30 a.m.; investigators had not determined the driver’s identity as of WKRN’s report.
Metro Nashville police described the driver only as a Hispanic man, according to WKRN News 2. Police said the crash showed no signs of driver impairment, and the Medical Examiner's Office is now working to formally identify him. As of the station's report, Metro police had no further information to release.
How Nashville Approaches Road Safety
This isn't the first time a stretch of Antioch Pike near McCall Street has turned deadly. Seven weeks earlier, a rollover crash slammed into the Glencliff area midday on Aug. 23, an incident Hoodline detailed in its report on a trapped driver's rescue. The page from Weir & Kestner Injury Lawyers discusses specific intersections, noting curves and fixed-object risks on Una Antioch Pike.
NDOT’s public engagement page describes a traffic-calming project along Antioch Pike involving the department and community groups: Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT).
What Vision Zero Says About This Location
Metro Nashville describes Vision Zero as a Metro-wide initiative led by NDOT and community partners, according to Metro Nashville. That description does not identify the Antioch Pike segment near McCall Street as a high-injury location or say whether it is included in a specific safety-improvement plan.
Other Fatal Crashes Nearby
Antioch Pike and its surrounding arterials have seen repeated fatal wrecks over the past year. In February, Metro police investigated a fatal hit-and-run on Antioch Pike in which a 77-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by an eastbound sedan whose driver fled, WSMV reported.
Una Antioch Pike has also been the site of other recent fatal collisions, including a three-vehicle crash that killed a Nashville woman in January. Those incidents, combined with Sunday's crash, underscore how frequently this pocket of South Nashville appears in Metro police crash reports.
A Citywide Pattern After Dark
Sunday's crash happened overnight. In 2024 alone, the county logged 116 traffic fatalities across more than 26,000 crashes, a death toll that exceeded the 104 homicides recorded in Davidson County that same year.
A report from WKRN said Metro police crash data showed a sharp rise in fatal traffic crashes across Davidson County during early 2026, alongside a spike in pedestrian deaths.
Investigators are still working to identify the driver and determine what sent the Volkswagen off the curve.
