A head-on collision between a white Rivian SUV and a silver Hyundai Sonata on Dublin Boulevard left one person dead and another injured Tuesday morning, after both vehicles went off the roadway and tumbled onto the shoulder of westbound Interstate 580. The crash happened near the interchange between Silvergate and Inspiration drives, prompting a lengthy road closure.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, police said two people were taken to the hospital, where one later died. The second person's condition remained unknown as of Tuesday evening, and police did not specify whether the two victims were drivers or passengers in the vehicles, the Chronicle reported. Officers also said the two vehicles did not strike any other cars during the crash.
Dublin Police Services officers responded to the scene at 8:54 a.m. Tuesday and shut down Dublin Boulevard in both directions between Inspiration Drive and Silvergate Drive from 9 a.m. until roughly 12:20 p.m., according to Dublin, CA Patch. The outlet reported that both vehicles left Dublin Boulevard and tumbled onto the freeway's shoulder before first responders arrived. The California Highway Patrol reported that two westbound I-580 lanes were blocked for several hours following the collision, according to the Chronicle.
What Police Have Confirmed So Far
Dublin Police Services Captain Miguel Campos confirmed the vehicle models involved and the crash's path off the roadway, but he said investigators were withholding the identities of the victims, specifics about their injuries, and the underlying cause of the crash while the investigation continues, Patch reported. Police have not disclosed the circumstances that caused the collision, Patch reported.
Dublin Police Services is not an independent municipal department. The agency operates under contract through the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, per the City of Dublin.
A Recent Safety Push
The collision occurred on Dublin Boulevard near Interstate 580. The segment near Inspiration Drive has a posted 40 mph speed limit.
Separately, the Dublin City Council authorized a California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund grant last year to acquire a dedicated DUI suppression vehicle and mobile speed-radar trailers aimed at curbing high-speed and impaired driving, per the City of Dublin.
For now, the cause of Tuesday's crash remains under investigation, and police have not released updates on the surviving victim's condition or the identity of the person who died.
