Five teenagers were arrested in East Nashville on Wednesday after police spotted a stolen Jeep Compass traveling alongside a stolen Kia sedan, triggering a pursuit that ended with spike strips on Shelby Avenue and a handgun recovered from one of the suspects. Two 18-year-olds, a 17-year-old, another 17-year-old, and a 14-year-old now face charges ranging from vehicle theft to evading arrest.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, detectives first noticed the 2026 Jeep Compass driving alongside a 2024 Kia sedan, both of which had been reported stolen within the prior two days. Officers believed the Jeep had been used in the theft of the Kia, as reported by WKRN News 2. The Jeep itself had been reported missing on October 12, with the Kia following a day later, per Metro Nashville Police Department records.

A police helicopter reportedly tracked the Kia to the 800 block of South 6th Street, with aviation crews helping direct ground units toward the fleeing vehicle, the station's report states. Spike strips were placed on Shelby Avenue near South 8th Street.

Teens Scatter, One Carrying a Gun

Once the spike strips brought the chase to a halt, two 17-year-olds and a 14-year-old ran from authorities before officers caught up with them, the same account notes. A handgun was recovered from one of the 17-year-old suspects during the apprehension. The Jeep Compass eventually stopped in the 500 block of Fatherland Street, where two 18-year-old suspects were taken into custody.

All five teens were reportedly charged with vehicle theft and evading arrest, per the station's report, while the two 18-year-old suspects each face three additional counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors. Both men remained jailed on $31,000 bond apiece.

Officials have not released additional information about Wednesday's case, including whether the juvenile suspects could face transfer proceedings to adult court.

The arrests come as auto theft incidents in Davidson County continued falling compared with 2025 levels, according to metrics WKRN News 2 reported in July.

Why Kias Keep Showing Up in These Chases

Kia sedans remain a recurring target for youth theft rings in Middle Tennessee. More than 1,700 Kia and Hyundai vehicles were stolen across Metro Nashville in 2023 after viral social media tutorials spread ignition bypass techniques; auto-theft reports in Metro Nashville had dropped more than 34% by September 2026, a decline attributed to software updates and targeted police enforcement. Hoodline, which reported on the city's lawsuit settlement with the automakers, described the decline. U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn cited state data showing Tennessee saw a nearly 200% surge in juvenile auto theft offenses in 2023 when she introduced federal juvenile crime legislation in May 2025, according to the TBA Law Blog.

What the Adult Suspects Could Face

The two 18-year-old suspects face vehicle-theft charges, and each faces three additional counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors.
