A 16-year-old boy was arrested after Edmond police say he threatened another boy with a machete in a McDonald's parking lot near Santa Fe High School, prompting the school to briefly enter Secure mode as a precaution. The teen now faces an allegation of assault with a deadly weapon stemming from the confrontation.
According to News 9, Edmond police responded to the McDonald's lot after reports of an altercation between the teen and another boy. Officers say the suspect was holding a machete and threatened the other boy during the confrontation. Police later located the suspect vehicle nearby and conducted a traffic stop, identifying one of the occupants as the suspect before taking him into custody.
Police say the altercation was isolated and stemmed from an earlier fight between the suspect and the victim. Investigators have indicated there is no ongoing threat to Santa Fe High School or the surrounding community, per the same account.
School Locked Down as a Precaution
Santa Fe High School was placed in secure mode as a precaution while officers worked the scene nearby. Principal Jason Hayes told parents and guardians that all outside doors were locked while the school day continued normally inside the building, the station's report notes. Once police informed the school that the situation had ended and the area was safe, administrators lifted the secure status.
That distinction matters to families trying to gauge how serious a given alert is. Edmond Public Schools uses the Standard Response Protocol, under which a Secure status means exterior doors are locked while normal instruction continues — a less severe measure than a full Lockdown, in which interior classroom doors are locked and students are kept out of sight. The district adopted the framework from the “I Love You Guys” Foundation to standardize emergency terminology across its schools.

The district's cellphone policy also shaped how students could have reached out during the alert. Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, Edmond Public Schools implemented Board Policy FNG under Oklahoma Senate Bill 139, restricting personal electronic devices during instructional hours, according to the district's own announcement.
