Downtown Elgin's annual Halloween spectacle is doubling its footprint this year. Nightmare on Chicago Street is expanding into a two-night event for the first time, with a concert-driven Friday kickoff on Oct. 16 followed by the full-scale horror experience on Saturday, Oct. 17, as reported by Shaw Local.
Friday's installment, dubbed Nightmare on Chicago Street: The Arrival, will put music front and center, with The Ataris taking the Chicago Street stage at 6 p.m., Plain White T's following at 7:30 p.m., and Gym Class Heroes closing the night at 9 p.m. Amanda Harris said, per a news release cited by Shaw Local, that the event will feature bands in downtown Elgin along with previews of Saturday's main event, adding that the new Friday format is geared toward people who love music and horror. According to Explore Elgin Area, this marks the first time Nightmare on Chicago Street has ever expanded to two nights.
Friday's Concert Party Meets Saturday's Full-Scale Horror
Friday's Arrival will still include a haunted attraction, food and beverage vendors, roaming performers, and access to the Cirq d' Freak horror-themed carnival, where aerialists, fire-breathers and undead clowns perform. Friday's event pairs music and immersive entertainment with food and beverage vendors and a haunted attraction. Organizers note that Friday's experience will be concentrated on Chicago Street itself, while Saturday's event returns to the full downtown footprint used in past years.
That traditional Saturday event will transform eight blocks of downtown Elgin into an immersive world, complete with live entertainment, food and beverage vendors, and a series of themed zones. Those zones include Thunder Dome, the Aztec underworld of Plaza Mictlán, the Kingdom of Plantae, Svengoolie's B-Movie Boulevard, and the Cirq d' Freak carnival area. Nightmare Alley returns as the event's signature haunted house attraction, backed by three stages of live music and DJs plus hundreds of specialty horror performers.
Debut Year and Attendance Figures Remain Murky
Shaw Local says Nightmare on Chicago Street debuted in 2012 and now attracts more than 20,000 attendees annually. The 2025 edition was billed as its 13th.
Tickets, Age Guidance and the Return of the Costume Contest
Each night of the 2026 event requires its own separate ticket, and organizers are not selling combination packages across the two nights. Friday general admission runs $49 plus fees, while Saturday general admission costs $35 plus fees; both nights also offer VIP options, according to the Enjoy Illinois listing. Organizers recommend buying tickets in advance, with full ticket information available at nightmareonchicagostreet.com.
The event is intended for attendees 17 and older, with younger attendees permitted when accompanied by an adult, per the Tribune's reporting. Saturday night also brings back the costume contest, with registration open from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Side Street Studio Arts. The contest is open to people 18 and older, with younger entrants requiring a parent's accompaniment, and all contestants must complete a registration form that includes a photo release, according to Side Street Studio Arts. Organizers prohibit sexually explicit costumes and nudity, along with restrictions covering weapons, hate-related content and costumes that promote materially dangerous activity. Cash prizes will be awarded across four categories: best horror/zombie, best couple/group, best fantasy/sci-fi/superhero and best overall.
