A storied corner of the Mission District is getting new life. Ember Cafe is moving into 3248 22nd St., the longtime home of Revolution Cafe, with owner Ajay Vellayapan aiming for a mid-November opening and plans to run the place seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The space has seen plenty of turnover. Revolution Cafe operated at Bartlett and 22nd streets for 15 years before closing in 2021, according to The San Francisco Standard. Greek wine bar Ivory & Vine followed as its successor, keeping the music going before it, too, shut down in 2023. Ember now inherits that layered history, and Vellayapan isn't shy about the pressure that comes with it. “We have a lot to live up to,” he told the Standard.

Vellayapan is leaning into continuity rather than starting from scratch. Ember Cafe is keeping the piano in a corner, along with the covered front porch seating and the windows that slide open toward the sidewalk. The cafe is also keeping the floor tiles from Ivory & Vine and four disco-ball-esque chandeliers, while adding rotating works from local artists to the walls.

A Day-Into-Night Menu With No Tip Jar

By day, Ember plans to serve lattes, cold brew, cold-pressed tea and pastries. Once the sun goes down, the menu shifts to wine, beer, spritzes, sandwiches, salads and charcuterie, per the same account. The cafe will also offer free Wi-Fi throughout the day.

One notable twist: Ember plans to use a no-tip model, building gratuity directly into its menu prices rather than prompting customers at checkout. Vellayapan envisions a night that starts at Ember with wine or coffee and live music before customers head off to the Make-Out Room, suggesting the cafe could become something of a launching pad for Mission nightlife rather than a final destination.

Construction Nearly Finished, Code Updates Remain

Construction is almost done, according to the Standard's reporting, with Vellayapan saying the remaining work is mostly bringing the building up to code. Once open, the calendar will fill out with trivia nights, lectures and music acts, according to the outlet, while Ember Cafe's own website lists plans for community events including comedy shows and lectures as well.

Vellayapan hopes the cafe will become a second home for students at City College of San Francisco, whose campus sits across the street from the new location. More broadly, he's aiming to make Ember a second home for the neighborhood at large. “It's truly meant to be a place that you can always come by,” he said, per the Standard's report.

Where the Name Ember Came From

The name carries personal weight for Vellayapan. He said Ember refers to the spark he hopes the cafe will be for the community, describing his vision as a place that is always burning and always open. That idea traces back to his own teenage years in Fremont, where he spent the bulk of his time at Suju's Coffee & Tea — a spot he's said became a second home for him.

His path into coffee work ran through Berkeley. Vellayapan worked as a barista at Philz near UC Berkeley's campus, commuting there on a 30-minute bus ride that started at 4 a.m. That grind appears to have shaped the hands-on approach he's bringing to his own cafe now.

Ember Cafe lists its owner as Ember Cafe LLC, with Vellayapan serving as the limited liability company's agent, according to Mission Local. On its own site, the cafe describes itself as San Francisco's community living room — a place to meet friends, go on a first date, or get work done, with plenty of plug points, free Wi-Fi and plenty of space, according to Ember Cafe's website.

Neighbors have already expressed excitement about the new late-night spot, per the Standard's reporting. For a stretch of 22nd Street that has cycled through a beloved neighborhood cafe, a Greek wine bar, and now a coffee-and-cocktails hybrid, Ember adds another chapter.
