An 18-year-old man was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds in the 400 block of West 61st Street in Englewood at about 7:55 a.m. Friday. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and no other injuries were reported in the shooting.
The unidentified man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which first reported the details of the shooting. WGN-TV reported that police said the teen was found just before 8 a.m. Friday suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his body, and that an investigation was underway after he was found fatally shot.
Area 1 detectives are investigating the case, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, Chicago police said, per WGN-TV. Police have asked anyone with information to contact CPD Area One detectives at 312-747-8380 or to dial 911. Tipsters can also leave an anonymous tip at CPDTip.com.
A Troubling Climb in Shootings on the South Side
Friday's shooting adds to a year that has already seen a sharp rise in violence in parts of the South Side. The Deering District, which covers Englewood, recorded 60 shootings since the start of 2026 and has tallied a 183% increase in homicides compared with the same period in 2025, according to data reported by the Chicago Tribune.
Chicago Police Area 1, the broader police area that includes the Deering District, has seen a 68% increase in homicides compared with the same period last year, the same Tribune analysis found. That spike comes after the city's overall gun violence rate dropped to ten-year lows in 2025, the newspaper reported, marking a reversal in a district that had been trending in the opposite direction.
Still Below 2022 Levels Citywide
Despite the localized surge, shootings and homicides across Chicago in 2026 remained much lower, year-to-date, than they were in 2022, per the Tribune's review of CPD data. No arrests have been announced in Friday's shooting, and police have not released information about a motive or suspect.
