A 33-year-old Flemington man died after his motorcycle slammed into the rear of a pickup truck that was turning into a residential driveway in Clinton Township on Saturday afternoon, according to authorities. Simon D. Zellin was riding a 2025 Yamaha R1 on County Road 629, north of the Cratetown Road intersection, when the crash happened around 3:50 p.m.

The collision involved a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck that was entering a residential driveway when Zellin's motorcycle struck the vehicle's rear passenger side and wheel, according to a joint statement from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office and Clinton Township Police Department, as reported by Shore News Network. Zellin received emergency medical assistance at the scene before being airlifted by the New Jersey State Police NorthStar helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he later died from his injuries.

The NorthStar aircraft is part of the state's JEMSTAR Emergency Medical Services Helicopter Response Program, a joint operation between the state police and the New Jersey Department of Health based out of Bedminster. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is one of only three state-designated Level I Trauma Centers in New Jersey, treating nearly 2,500 emergency trauma patients annually, according to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Driver and Passenger Avoid Serious Injury

The pickup truck's driver was not injured in the crash, while a passenger in the truck sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, per the Shore News Network account. Hunterdon County dispatch received the initial report of the crash around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, and Clinton Township police officers responded along with Hunterdon Health Emergency Services, Annandale Hose Company, and South Branch Emergency Services, all of which assisted at the scene.

A preliminary investigation determined that the Chevrolet Colorado was in the process of entering a driveway when the Yamaha struck its rear passenger side and wheel, the outlet's reporting states. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the collision or whether speed or other factors contributed, and no charges have been announced.

Serious Crash Team Leading Reconstruction

In a joint statement issued Sunday, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson and the Clinton Township Police Department confirmed that the Serious Crash Investigation Team was deployed to County Road 629 to lead the detailed reconstruction of the collision, according to Daily Voice. The Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office Serious Crash Investigation Team is examining the collision to determine the full circumstances leading up to impact, and the case remains under investigation by both the prosecutor's office and Clinton Township police.

Witnesses and anyone with information about the crash are asked to contact Detective John Laurencelle of the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office at 908-788-1129.

A Recurring Hazard on New Jersey Roads

Under New Jersey statute N.J.S.A. 39:4-66, drivers entering or crossing a public highway from a driveway or private road must stop immediately before entering the roadway and yield the right of way to any oncoming traffic close enough to pose an immediate hazard, according to Justia Law. A related statute, N.J.S.A. 39:4-90, similarly requires drivers executing a left turn across traffic to yield to any oncoming vehicle within the intersection or close enough to constitute an immediate hazard, per FindLaw.

Nationally, crashes involving vehicles turning left or crossing into oncoming traffic account for 42% to 46% of all fatal two-vehicle motorcycle crashes, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data cited in prior Hoodline coverage of a similar New Jersey crash. That pattern has repeated across the state this year, including a fatal Verona motorcyclist crash on Route 78 and a fatal Linden collision that remains under investigation.

Part of a Troubling Local Pattern

Zellin's death adds to a string of recent fatal traffic incidents in Hunterdon County. In September, 73-year-old Dennis Schmatz of Flemington died after being struck by a motor vehicle at a Flemington intersection, and later that month two people were killed on Interstate 78 near milepost 15.4 in Union Township when a passenger car collided with a tractor-trailer.

Statewide, motorcyclist fatalities in New Jersey dropped by roughly 40% in 2025, falling to 72 deaths from a 15-year high of 120 in 2024. Meanwhile, preliminary New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit figures through mid-September showed 368 people had died in 353 fatal roadway crashes statewide this year, a 10% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
