A body was found floating in the North Fork New River in Fort Lauderdale late Tuesday morning, and homicide detectives are now leading a death investigation into how it got there. Police divers were called out to pull the body from the water, and investigators have so far released almost nothing about what they found.
According to the Miami Herald, police received a call about a body in the water off the 1700 block of West Broward Boulevard around 11:10 a.m. Tuesday. Fort Lauderdale homicide detectives are investigating the discovery, the paper reported, and police divers were sent in to recover the body from the river.
Beyond confirming that a death investigation is underway, police did not provide any other details, the outlet's report states. No information about the identity of the person pulled from the water, the cause of death, or how long the body may have been in the river has been made public.
Conflicting Accounts Of Where And When
Other news outlets have published reports describing a body pulled from Fort Lauderdale's New River, but the accounts do not line up cleanly with each other on timing or location, and it is not clear whether they describe the same case. A separate Miami Herald report placed a body recovery at the 1600 block of West Broward Boulevard around 12:10 p.m. on a Wednesday, with both Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue responding to the scene.
WSVN reported yet another version, saying a body was found floating near the 1500 block of Broward Boulevard, just west of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, on a Friday afternoon at around 12:30 p.m. That station said Fort Lauderdale Police detectives were investigating the discovery of a dead person in the New River, and that no further details were provided.
A search-result snippet from Local 10 added still another description, stating that Fort Lauderdale police pulled a body from the New River on a Tuesday afternoon and that a death investigation was underway. Given the differing blocks, times and days across these accounts, it could not be confirmed whether they all refer to the same discovery along the waterway.
What Remains Unknown
No police spokesperson has been named in connection with the case, and no information about the victim's identity, age or possible cause of death has been released in any of the available reports. It also remains unverified whether there was any sign of foul play. The Miami Herald noted that its story may be updated as more information becomes available, and Hoodline will do the same as official details emerge from Fort Lauderdale police.
