A 54-year-old Gage Park woman has died more than a week after she suffered a fall at an event and was then struck in the face by a man during an argument on the way to the hospital. Maria Delgado was hospitalized starting Oct. 9 and died Saturday afternoon at Stroger Hospital, according to Chicago police.
Delgado had attended an unspecified event when she fell, according to the Chicago Tribune. While she and a 58-year-old man were riding to the hospital, the two began arguing about the fall, and the man struck her across the face in the 3900 block of West 58th Street in the West Elsdon neighborhood, police said.
The man was arrested at the hospital and charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery, per the same report. Chicago police launched a death investigation after Delgado died at Stroger Hospital on Oct. 17, more than a week after the fall and the alleged battery occurred on the same night.
Cause of Death Still Pending Further Studies
The Cook County medical examiner's office said Tuesday that Delgado's cause of death remained pending the results of the police investigation and further studies. Police said that evening that the investigation by Wentworth Area detectives was still active, with no additional updates released on the circumstances linking the fall, the alleged battery, and her death.
A Broader Pattern in Illinois
Delgado's death comes as Illinois officials have been tracking a shift in domestic-violence fatalities statewide. Domestic-violence-related deaths in Illinois fell by 26% in 2025, according to a report from Fox Illinois, after the total had climbed 140% between 2022 and 2024. The state recorded 101 domestic-violence-related deaths across 72 separate incidents, with firearms involved in 68% of those deaths.
The report also found that domestic-violence homicide victims statewide were 69% female and 31% male, while men made up 95% of the perpetrators identified in those cases. Delgado was 54, and the circumstances of her death are still under review by investigators.
Another Recent Chicago Case
Delgado's case follows another domestic violence incident in Chicago that ended in a death. In East Garfield Park, officers found 59-year-old Keri Chappell dead on the ground in her apartment in the 3500 block of West Flournoy Street, according to CBS News Chicago. Connor Williams, 34, was later charged with two counts of murder in her death.
Chappell had gone to the 11th District police station around noon Friday to file a domestic battery report, telling officers that Williams had grabbed her by the hair, pulling chunks from her scalp, and headbutted her in the face, causing an abrasion on her lip, per the CBS News Chicago account. Officers found her body shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, and Williams was arrested at the scene shortly afterward.
No further details have been released on Delgado's case beyond what police and the medical examiner's office have confirmed so far. Wentworth Area detectives continue to investigate, and no additional charges have been announced.
