A 32-year-old woman was shot in the head while riding as a passenger in a car in Brighton Park on Chicago's Southwest Side, in a shooting police and a local alderman described as a possible case of road rage. The attack happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of West 47th Street, leaving the woman in critical condition.
Police say a gray sedan pulled up alongside the vehicle the woman was riding in, and someone inside that car opened fire, according to WGN-TV. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. The gunman's car then fled southbound on Western Avenue, police said.
Alderman Raymond Lopez said the shooting appeared connected to road rage, a detail also covered by FOX 32 Chicago. Per Lopez, witnesses identified the suspected vehicle as a gray four-door Toyota Scion with a rear bike rack.
Detectives Review Camera Footage in Shooting Investigation
The Chicago Police Department's 9th District is reviewing all available camera footage from the area, while Area One detectives are leading the investigation into the shooting, the station's report notes. Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
This is not the first time gunfire has erupted between vehicles in Brighton Park. In an earlier incident reported by ABC7 Chicago, a man and woman were wounded in a shooting while driving in Brighton Park after a dark-colored SUV approached their vehicle and someone inside opened fire, striking both of them. The details of that earlier case remain distinct from Thursday's shooting, though both point to the risk drivers in the neighborhood have faced from gunfire directed at vehicles.
Road Rage Violence Surfaces Elsewhere Around Chicago
The Brighton Park shooting comes amid a string of road-rage incidents that have drawn charges elsewhere in the Chicago area. Two Chicago residents were arrested and charged in connection with a September shooting on the Stevenson Expressway, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Pedro Anzaldua, 28, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault, while Janie Palomo, 32, was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault with a firearm, per that report. Illinois State Police said the case stemmed from two people on a motorcycle firing shots at another vehicle in the southbound I-55 lanes during a road-rage incident on September 5, though no injuries were reported in that encounter.
The Brighton Park shooting also lands at a moment when the city's overall violence numbers have been trending downward. Chicago recorded 39 homicides in August 2026, the lowest total for any August since 2011, according to a report from WTTW News. Shooting incidents in August fell by nearly 20% compared with the same month in 2025, with 141 incidents and 198 people shot citywide. Police also recovered 1,049 firearms that month and 7,346 since the start of the year, per the same outlet's data.
Police have not confirmed a motive beyond the possible road-rage connection cited by Lopez. Investigators continue to ask anyone with information to come forward.
