A Happy Valley man will spend the next 18 years in prison after a jury convicted him of sexually abusing a girl for roughly three years, beginning when she was just 11 years old. Michael Oluwasanu Idowu, 45, was sentenced on Friday for the abuse along with a separate domestic violence case involving strangulation and coercion charges.
Idowu was sentenced on Friday, Oct. 23, to spend 18 years behind bars, according to KPTV. The sentence follows convictions in two separate Clackamas County cases that were handed down earlier in October, as KOIN reports. According to KATU, Idowu was convicted of assaulting both an adult woman and a child.
A Years-Long Pattern of Abuse
A jury found Idowu guilty of first-degree attempted rape, three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, and two counts of third-degree sexual abuse, per the same account. The abuse began when the girl was 11 years old and continued for about three years, the station notes.
The case came to light after a woman reported being assaulted by Idowu and also reported his abuse of the child to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, the outlet reports. That report set off the investigation that ultimately led to both sets of charges against him.
Separate Domestic Violence Case
In a second, separate case, Idowu pleaded guilty to strangulation, first-degree criminal mistreatment, and two counts of coercion, the station notes. That plea came after he had already been found guilty in the child abuse case, moving both matters toward sentencing together.
Officials have not released any details about how Idowu is related to the victims, according to KPTV. That leaves an open question in a case where the broad outlines of the abuse and the sentence are now a matter of public record.
Court filings and official registers of actions for Oregon state court cases, including trial-level proceedings, are generally maintained through the Oregon Judicial Case Information Network, according to the Oregon courts system. No further details on the specific sentencing structure in Idowu's case were released beyond the 18-year term reported by local stations.
