Herriman shoppers no longer have to cross I-15 for Trader Joe's. The grocery chain opened its eighth Utah store on Friday at 4918 W. 13400 South, a 9,200-square-foot location in The Commons at Herriman Towne Center that marks the company's first store on the west side of the interstate.

Doors opened at 9 a.m. with free samples for shoppers, according to ABC4, which reported that the grand opening had been set for that exact time and date nearly a year after Herriman was first promised a store. More than 60 new Crew Members were hired from the local community to staff the location, and Store Captain Douglas Overholtz will run day-to-day operations. “Herriman has been hungry for a Trader Joe's and I'm excited to make that dream happen,” Overholtz said, according to ABC4, adding that he expects the store to become “a staple grocery store for many people in the area.”

The new store will keep daily hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the station reported. Inside, shelves are stocked with everyday basics like milk, eggs, meat, bakery items and fresh produce alongside the label's signature oddities — think Mandarin Orange Chicken and Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate — plus beer, according to Trader Joe's own store listing. ABC4 Utah, in its own coverage of the opening, also reported that shoppers could find eggs, unusual flavor combinations and chili lime rolled corn tortilla chips on the shelves.

A Long-Awaited Arrival on the West Side

Herriman residents had been waiting since Trader Joe's announced a store for the city, nearly a year before it opened. For resident Edith Dube, the payoff was proximity: she said the new store sits closer to home than the existing Trader Joe's locations in Draper and Salt Lake City, and praised the chain for selling organic and healthy products and accessories, according to ABC4 Utah's coverage of the opening. Shopper Rachel Reeves put an even finer point on it, saying the new location is just five minutes from her home and praising the chain's prices, product quality, freshness and staff.

Before Friday, Trader Joe's operated in Riverdale, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Draper and Orem, plus two stores in Salt Lake City, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. The Herriman opening brings the statewide count to eight. Before the Herriman opening, Utah had seven Trader Joe's stores.

More Stores Still in the Pipeline

The Tribune reported that Trader Joe's had confirmed a West Jordan location but had not announced an opening date as of late September, and that the company also said it plans to open a store in South Jordan.

A Daybreak store is also in the works.

Leftover Food Finds a Second Home

Leftover Food Finds a Second Home Beyond the shelves, Trader Joe's Neighborhood Shares Program donates 100% of unsold products that remain fit to eat to nonprofit, community-based organizations. It's a practice the chain applies system-wide as it expands its Utah footprint, donating unsold products that remain fit to eat to nonprofit, community-based organizations.
