Illinois State Police Trooper Seth Gooch responded to a call about a possible suicidal subject on Jefferson Barracks Bridge.
According to Illinois State Police on Facebook, two good Samaritans had tried to stop Miss Patti from jumping before she went over the rail. Individuals with a boat helped locate her more than two miles from where she entered the water, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment. In the days that followed, Trooper Gooch visited her in person to check on her progress and offer encouragement, and this week she returned the gesture, personally thanking him at Troop 8 for helping save her life.
The Jefferson Barracks Bridge
The Jefferson Barracks Bridge crosses the Mississippi River, according to John A. Weeks III. The structure has two arch spans, with the first opening in 1983 and the south span following in the early 1990s after construction delays caused by a crane dropping a bridge section into the river, per the same source.
A separate incident on the bridge ended with a person being brought to safety, according to St. Louis Scanner News.
Mississippi River Currents
The Mississippi's surface current varies along its course: it runs about 1.2 miles per hour at the river's headwaters and about 3 miles per hour at New Orleans, according to the National Park Service.
The search drew in a wide roster of agencies working across the state line. An Illinois Department of Transportation emergency patrol vehicle supported the response, river diving and salvage personnel assisted Trooper Gooch on the water, and the Columbia Police Department deployed a drone to help locate her. The Columbia Fire Department provided the rescue boat that ultimately helped bring her in, a crew whose members had completed a four-day Swift Water Technician training course in St. Louis just weeks earlier in May 2026, focused on moving-water victim rescues, rope systems, and nighttime operations, according to an Instagram post
documenting the training. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office and Mehlville Fire/EMS also supported the operation.
Specialized Local Rescue Infrastructure
The Mehlville Fire Protection District serves South St. Louis County, including 21 miles of river shoreline, and maintains a specially trained boat rescue team. It also draws on marine-industry partnerships for heavy tugboat support during Mississippi River calls near the bridge, per the St. Louis Call Newspapers.
Her Message to the Trooper Who Stayed With Her
After the jump, Miss Patti reached out directly to Trooper Gooch. “Trooper this is Patti, the woman whose life you saved from the river about a month ago. I wanted to thank you again for what you did for me. In my eyes and many others you are a true Hero,” she wrote, according to the transcript of her message shared by Illinois State Police. She described her ongoing recovery candidly: “I am still learning to walk properly again and still have to wait for my broken neck to heal in a nursing home. But without you I believe we know the outcome would have been much darker.” She closed by telling him, “I want you to know I will always remember your visit and what you did for me. Thank you with all my heart.”
Illinois State Police say Miss Patti is grateful to be alive and continues to recover. In sharing her story, the department also pointed to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which provides support by call or text 24 hours a day. Since its launch in July 2022, the national line has fielded more than 23 million calls, texts, and chats, with contact volume growing 15% year-over-year in early 2026, according to Becker's Behavioral Health. A July 2026 report from the Pew Charitable Trusts found that youth and young adult suicide deaths among ages 15 to 34 were 11% lower than projected between July 2022 and December 2024 following the Lifeline's rollout, underscoring the broader stakes behind interventions like the one on the Jefferson Barracks Bridge.
