Jordan High School opened a new Black Box theater and a 36,000-square-foot field house, adding new facilities to the Sandy campus. Students and community members gathered for a ribbon cutting on September 9, 2026, marking the completion of both spaces, part of a broader construction push that has reshaped much of the campus over the past year.

The new theater addresses a need for Jordan's performing-arts program. According to the Sandy Journal, Canyons School District High School Director Tom Sherwood said the space fills a need that has existed for decades, calling it long overdue for a program that has outgrown its old quarters.

Canyons Board of Education member Karen Pedersen said the new theater and field house will expand opportunities for students across the board, not just for athletes or thespians but for the wider student body who will use the flexible spaces. The theater itself includes new dressing rooms and costume storage, the Sandy Journal reports, giving performers dedicated room for rehearsals, classes and smaller productions that previously had nowhere to go.

A Theater Named For a Family That Shaped the Area

The Black Box theater will carry the names of Anna Berg Jorgensen and her daughters, Ruth and Juanita, honoring a family with deep ties to the school and the land around it. Dan Jorgensen, a former Jordan High student body president who graduated in 1956, donated a portion of the theater's cost in their memory, per the same account.

For current students, the theater's arrival means new creative possibilities. Students have expressed hopes of staging performances in the additional space. That enthusiasm fits a program with a strong homegrown streak: about three-quarters of the plays staged last year were written by students themselves, according to a separate Sandy Journal report on the theater program.

Field House Ends Years of Scrambling for Practice Space

On the athletics side, the new 36,000-square-foot field house gives Jordan student-athletes an indoor place to practice during inclement weather. The facility provides space for field sports to practice indoors.

The new building includes athletic training, team activity and fitness center spaces, with the fitness center expected to be completed by fall 2026.

Jordan student-athletes will be able to use the field house as an indoor option for practice during inclement weather.

Part of a Larger Campus Overhaul

The field house and theater are pieces of a much larger renovation effort underway at Jordan High. More than half of a $45.8 million lease-revenue bond is being used to fund extensive upgrades across the campus, according to an earlier Sandy Journal report. That same reporting put the total project cost at $24 million. The district says the bond behind the work was approved by the Canyons Board of Education in February.

Beyond the field house and theater, the broader project has brought audio-visual upgrades to Jordan High's main auditorium, along with improvements to the irrigation system and parking lot, the district notes.
