A school resource officer was injured Tuesday morning after a juvenile allegedly destroyed property in a school office at Oakville High School, then kicked and struck the officer multiple times before being taken into custody. Both the officer and the juvenile were treated for minor injuries at nearby hospitals.
The St. Louis County Police Department reported that the officer was hurt during an altercation at the school, according to FOX 2. Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and no further details have been released about the juvenile's identity or any charges that may follow.
A Mehlville School District spokesperson shared a letter sent to parents describing the response, saying administrators and emergency personnel responded to what the letter called an individual student incident isolated in the office. As a result, Oakville High School was placed under a precautionary hold from 9:05 to 9:30 a.m.
What a School Hold Means for Students and Staff
During a hold, the district said individual classrooms are secured and students are kept in place while administrators and responders handle the situation. The hold at Oakville High was lifted after 25 minutes, and the school's normal schedule resumed. The parent letter emphasized that the safety and security of students remains the school's top priority and that the district will keep families informed as more becomes known.
St. Louis County police have not released additional information beyond confirming that the case remains under investigation. The report notes no further details were available Tuesday about what specifically prompted the confrontation inside the office.
Part of a Broader Pattern in Local Schools
The Oakville incident follows other recent flashpoints between students and school staff across the region. In September, Saint Louis Public Schools and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department opened an investigation into an altercation between a student and a staff member at Roosevelt High School, according to First Alert 4. Oakville High School itself has a history with student altercations; KSDK previously reported that three students were taken into custody following a separate fight at the school in 2018.
Scrutiny of school resource officers and use-of-force incidents extends beyond Missouri as well. A recent analysis by the Flatwater Free Press found that school resource officers in Omaha-area schools have used force on students dozens of times since 2021, reflecting local debate and concerns about school resource officers.
For now, the Mehlville School District has not announced any further response beyond its letter to parents, and police have not indicated when the investigation into the Oakville attack might conclude.
