A driver parked in Kalihi was confronted by two men who allegedly threatened to shoot him, smashed his windows and ripped chains off his neck; one suspect also took items from inside the vehicle before the men fled on foot. The victim was able to drive away from his attackers, but the case remains open as investigators ask the public for help identifying the pair.

What Happened Early That Morning

The robbery unfolded on Oct. 14 around 2:15 a.m. while the victim sat inside his parked vehicle, according to Hawaii News Now. Two men approached both sides of the car at the same time, per the Honolulu Police Department. One of the suspects allegedly threatened to shoot the victim if he didn't get out of the vehicle.

That same suspect reportedly used a metal object to smash both driver-side windows and then tore two silver chains off the victim's neck. While that was happening, the second suspect is accused of standing on the passenger side and grabbing items from inside the car. The victim managed to drive away from both men before they fled on foot, running north on Kalihi Street.

Descriptions Released by Police

Police have released limited descriptions of the two men as they continue the search. The first suspect is described as having a medium build and was wearing a black long-sleeve jacket with dark-colored shorts and shoes. The second suspect is described as heavy and was wearing a white long-sleeve T-shirt with light-colored shorts.

No arrests have been announced in connection with this specific case since the report was published. Anyone with information is being asked to call CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300, and police have also set up an option to submit tips online.

Part of a Pattern of Robberies in the Neighborhood

This isn't the only robbery to hit Kalihi this year. In July, police sought a suspect in a Kalihi convenience-store armed robbery, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. That same month, HPD confirmed a 36-year-old man had been charged with first-degree robbery in that same case, per KITV.

Other recent Kalihi cases show a mix of outcomes. A 26-year-old man suspected of first-degree robbery was arrested the same morning as a Kalihi robbery back in April, the Star-Advertiser reported. And in December 2024, three men were arrested while a fourth remained on the run in connection with a robbery on Adelaide Street in Kalihi, according to the same paper.

It's unclear whether the victim in this latest robbery suffered any injuries or how much was taken from inside the vehicle, and police have not said whether either suspect has since been identified. For now, investigators are relying on the public to help close the gap, with the CrimeStoppers tip line standing as the main avenue for anyone who may have seen the two men running from the scene that night.
