Miami woke Friday under mostly cloudy skies with temperatures around 72 degrees, but the weekend forecast is turning into a serious coastal-weather story. Showers and thunderstorms may pop up throughout the day, while northeast winds strengthen and high tides raise the risk of flooding near the water.
Friday’s high should reach about 82 degrees, with a 50% chance of rain. The National Weather Service in Miami expects northeast winds to pick up Friday, with gusts of 20 to 30 mph possible; showers and storms are possible from the morning into the afternoon.
King Tides Raise Flooding Concern
A Coastal Flood Advisory and High Rip Current Risk statement remain in effect through Saturday evening for coastal Miami-Dade County. Moderate flooding is expected around high tide, with water possibly affecting low-lying roads, parks and lots; isolated road closures are possible.
The flooding threat could become more serious in the second half of the weekend, when seasonal King Tides are expected to peak. The local forecast office puts the chance of major coastal flooding at 10% to 30%, especially when high tides overlap with heavy rain and strong onshore winds.
Storms And Gusty Winds Arrive Sunday
Saturday will be warm, with a high near 83 degrees and a 70% chance of precipitation. Northeast winds will be gusty, with gusts of 25 to 35 mph, making beach and boating conditions increasingly rough.
Sunday and Monday bring the biggest weather concerns, with rounds of showers, heavy at times, and highs in the low to middle 80s. Sunday has a 90% chance of precipitation. Northeast wind gusts could reach 30 to 40 mph Sunday, according to the Miami forecast.
Beachgoers And Drivers Should Use Caution
The high rip current risk is expected to continue through at least Saturday evening, and dangerous surf conditions may persist into next week. Swimmers should stay near a lifeguard, avoid entering rough water and remember that rip currents can pull even strong swimmers away from shore.
Drivers should allow extra time near flood-prone areas and never drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. If a rip current catches you, relax and float, then swim parallel to the shoreline when possible instead of fighting directly against the current.
Breezy Conditions Linger Into Next Week
Conditions should improve Tuesday into midweek, with scattered coastal showers and highs generally in the low to middle 80s.
