A 22-year-old Knoxville man is facing three counts of felony aggravated assault after police say he pointed a handgun at two drivers during a road rage confrontation near the I-640 bridge on North Broadway. Jacob Miller was arrested Thursday at a residence on Howard Street, where officers seized a firearm and ammunition as evidence.
According to WATE 6 On Your Side, the confrontation unfolded Wednesday in the 5200 block of North Broadway, where officers were dispatched after two separate vehicles reported being threatened near the I-640 bridge. Court records cited by the station say the driver of a red Honda Fit abruptly switched into the left lane in front of one victim's car, prompting that driver to swerve into the right lane to avoid a collision. The Honda driver then allegedly reached into a bag, racked the slide of a handgun, and pointed the weapon toward the victims.
Knoxville police identified the suspect during their investigation and arrested him Thursday, according to WBIR, which identified the suspect as 22-year-old Jacob Miller and reported that officers confiscated a firearm and ammunition at the Howard Street address. Police said they were grateful for the persistent and collaborative efforts of officers working to identify and arrest people who threaten community safety, per WATE's reporting.
A Corridor With a History of Violence
A Corridor With a History of Violence The stretch of North Broadway near the I-640 interchange is no stranger to driver confrontations. A rolling dispute near Tazewell Pike and Sanders Drive on August 30 escalated into gunfire between a car and a motorcycle, leaving one driver hospitalized, according to Hoodline. In another incident, police solicited video tips from the public after a road rage altercation near the same I-640 exit ramp turned into a physical assault.
The corridor connects suburban commuters to the interstate and contributed to six fatal crashes along North Broadway in 2025 alone. In June, a single-vehicle crash near Cecil Avenue killed the driver and two pedestrians on a sidewalk, according to the Knoxville Police Department.
Road Rage Shootings on the Rise Citywide
Road Rage Shootings on the Rise Citywide Miller's arrest comes amid armed driving disputes across Knoxville. As of August, the Knoxville Police Department had recorded 41 road rage incidents citywide in 2026, with 14 involving firearms and three resulting in actual gunfire, the department said in a statement reported by WBIR. In June, police arrested 21-year-old Keyone Berry on aggravated assault and child endangerment charges after a traffic collision on Woodlawn Pike turned into a road rage shooting on Moody Avenue in South Knoxville, with Berry allegedly out on bond for prior felony charges at the time.
Nationally, Everytown for Gun Safety has reported that someone is shot and wounded or killed in a road-rage incident roughly every 18 hours.
What Miller Could Face in Court
Under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-102, intentionally or knowingly displaying a deadly weapon such as a firearm during an assault is classified as a Class C felony, according to May McKinney PLLC. That charge carries statutory penalties of three to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000 per count, meaning Miller's three charges could carry significant combined exposure. A suspect may face aggravated-assault charges for displaying a deadly weapon during an assault.
It remains unclear when Miller will make his initial court appearance or what his bond status is, and whether additional traffic citations will be filed in Knox County General Sessions Court. For now, police say the arrest reflects their continued focus on tracking down drivers who turn routine traffic disputes into armed confrontations on some of the city's busiest roads.
