Chicago police are searching for a man accused of committing a lewd act aboard a CTA train on the North Side, in an incident that happened around 9 p.m. earlier in the week in the 3900 block of North Sheridan Road. Police have described the incident as a lewd act.
The 3900 block of North Sheridan Road is in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. As reported by FOX 32 Chicago, police describe the suspect as a Black man in his 30s to 40s, standing roughly 6 feet tall and weighing around 200 pounds, with slight facial hair.
Police have released surveillance images of the suspect and are asking anyone with information about him or the incident to come forward. Tips can go to CPD Mass Transit Detectives at 312-745-4447, or be submitted anonymously at CPTTIP.com.
Part of a Busy Fall for Transit Sex-Crime Alerts
This case is just the latest in a string of CPD mass transit advisories issued across Chicago's rail network in recent weeks. Hoodline previously reported that detectives sought a man accused of grabbing a rider without consent inside the Red Line station at State and Lake on September 3. Mass transit detectives also issued alerts for a September 5 attack at the Blue Line's Cumberland station and a September 10 groping incident near Irving Park station, with investigators saying suspects in both cases inappropriately touched female passengers before fleeing.
Illinois law classifies performing an act of sexual conduct or lewd exposure in a public place such as a transit train as public indecency, a Class A misdemeanor.
CTA leadership has pointed to broader improvement, reporting a 45% drop in overall serious crime and a 58% drop in violent crime systemwide in June 2026 compared to a year earlier, though transit union leaders publicly disputed those figures, according to CBS News Chicago. A September 24, 2026, analysis of Chicago Data Portal records by the Illinois Policy Institute found that the Roosevelt Red Line stop logged 15.9 crimes per 100,000 rides; it also found that the busiest stations did not necessarily have the highest crime rates.
New Oversight Agency, Push for More Officers
The investigation also comes amid a shakeup in how Chicago's transit system is governed. On September 1, the Northern Illinois Transit Authority officially took over from the Regional Transportation Authority as the region's transit oversight body, with an expanded regional oversight role that includes a focus on public safety, per Illinois Policy.
Separately, a Chicago City Council committee voted in late September to advance a proposal that would boost CTA safety funding enough to support up to 180 police officers per day aboard trains and buses.
No arrest has been announced in the Sheridan Road case. Anyone with information is urged to contact CPD Mass Transit Detectives or submit a tip anonymously through CPTTIP.com.
