A disagreement over a parking space at a Loxahatchee Publix ended with a husband and wife in handcuffs, accused of punching a man through his own car window and pinning him inside. Charles Johnson, 66, and Lisa Johnson, 63, now each face a felony charge of burglary with assault or battery following the confrontation.
Deputies were called to the Publix at 7050 Seminole Pratt Whitney Road after reports of a disturbance, according to WPBF 25. Charles and Lisa Johnson, who are husband and wife, were arrested on the felony charges after the parking-space dispute, the station reports, citing the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say the man involved told them he had been trying to back into a parking spot when another vehicle drove around him and took it first, according to CBS12. That's when, per the arrest affidavit, Charles Johnson approached the vehicle and allegedly began punching the man through the open driver's-side window.
Manager Says She Watched the Attack Unfold
The affidavit states that Lisa Johnson also struck the man through the window and then pushed the vehicle's door closed, preventing him from getting out. A Publix store manager witnessed the confrontation and told deputies she saw the couple strike the man and did not see him assault either suspect, the same account notes.
Deputies reported observing pink marks and what appeared to be a scratch on the man's neck. Based on those observations and the manager's account, deputies determined there was probable cause to arrest both Charles and Lisa Johnson on the burglary charge, per the arrest affidavit.
Both Booked on Felony Charges
Charles and Lisa Johnson were booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of burglary with assault or battery, a felony under Florida law. Jail records indicate both remained in custody following their arrests.
The case remains under investigation, and no further details about potential court proceedings have been released.
