Battle Ground Academy quarterback Bo Bryan broke his collarbone after getting sacked and landing hard on his right shoulder during Friday night's game against Pope John Paul II, and on Monday he underwent surgery to repair it. The 18-year-old is the son of country music star Luke Bryan, whose family shared updates on the injury and recovery over the past few days.
Bryan was hurt on a hit during the first quarter of BGA's second drive, according to The Tennessean, which reported that he left the game and returned to the sideline out of his pads with his right arm in a sling. The following day, Bryan posted on Instagram that he had broken his collarbone the night before, writing, “Broke my collarbone last night. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers,” per iHeart Country.
On Monday morning, Luke Bryan posted an Instagram reel showing himself, Bo and Bo's mom Caroline on their way to the hospital for the surgery, according to a report from USA Today. Caroline Bryan offered her own message that day, calling it a difficult stretch for the family while expressing confidence in her son's recovery. “Not the best day for Bo, or our family, but he'll be back!!!!” she wrote, per the same iHeart Country report.
A Breakout Senior Season Cut Short
Before the injury, Bryan had completed 74% of his passes for 2,006 yards, 30 touchdowns and just three interceptions through seven games, numbers that the USA Today report notes had him among the leading contenders for the Division II-AA Mr. Football award. He set career highs with 409 passing yards and six touchdowns in a 41-36 win over Franklin Road Academy on Sept. 25, then topped that with seven touchdown passes in a 56-7 win over Davidson Academy, the outlet's report states.
Those numbers came in his first full season as a starter, a run the Tennessean's report credited with helping lift BGA to a strong record overall, though the two outlets' accounts of that record diverge. USA Today put the Wildcats at 7-1 heading into the two regular-season games left before postseason play begins in November, while the Tennessean described BGA as 6-1 through seven games at the time Bryan went down.
Backup Steps In, Delivers Shutout Win
With Bryan sidelined, Maximus Curry stepped in at quarterback and played most of the snaps the rest of the way, despite reportedly never having played the position before, according to the USA Today account. Curry led BGA to a 35-0 win over Pope John Paul II that night. The two outlets differ on the exact line Curry put up: USA Today reported he completed three of six passes for 53 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions, while The Tennessean listed him at three of seven for 53 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Battle Ground Academy is set to host Goodpasture on Friday before closing the regular season on the road against Grace Christian Academy the following week, per USA Today's report. The games arrive as the Wildcats push toward the postseason while Bryan recovers from his injury.
