A man was shot and critically injured in west Phoenix late Saturday night. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 10:30 p.m. near Indian School Road and 27th Avenue, where they found a man who had been shot.
The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Phoenix Police Department, as reported by AZ Family. Police have described the investigation as ongoing, and it remains unclear whether a suspect had been identified or arrested.
A Stretch of Road With a Troubled History
This is not the first time this particular stretch of west Phoenix has made headlines for gunfire. Just three weeks earlier, officers were called to a shooting near the same intersection at midnight on a Saturday and found a man with a gunshot wound to his hand, the station's report noted. In that case, as in Saturday's shooting, police were still searching for a suspect.
In September, a shooting near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road happened around 2 p.m., with the victim also suffering life-threatening injuries, according to a report from 12 News. And in June, a man was shot multiple times near the same intersection early in the morning and was transported in critical condition, per a separate account from ABC15.
Earlier Violence Turned Deadly
The intersection has seen fatal violence before, too. A January 2025 report from ABC15 described two shooting scenes near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road, one of which left two men shot, including 39-year-old Willie Harvey, who did not survive his injuries. A separate shooting a few hours earlier that same night, near 27th and Campbell avenues, also left a man dead, according to that report.
It remains unclear whether Saturday's shooting is connected to any of these earlier incidents, and nothing in the record establishes a link between them. Each case has been reported separately, with its own circumstances and, in most instances, no identified suspect.
Reporting Changes Complicate the Bigger Picture
Broader crime statistics for Phoenix are harder to pin down right now than they once were. The Phoenix Police Department transitioned to a new Records Management System in September 2025, which enabled it to begin reporting to the National Incident-Based Reporting System in January 2026, and discontinued reporting to the old Uniform Crime Reporting Summary Reporting System that month, according to the City of Phoenix. That transition means current, verified crime-rate comparisons for the area are not readily available.
For now, the focus remains on Saturday's shooting itself. Police have not released the victim's identity, age, or condition update, and the investigation into what happened near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road continues.
