A man was found dead early Saturday morning in New Orleans East, and New Orleans police have opened a homicide investigation into his death. The victim was reported down in the 4900 block of Treves Street around 6:11 a.m., according to police, and his identity and age have not been released.
The exact cause of the homicide remains under investigation, according to WDSU, which also confirmed the crime occurred near the same stretch of Treves Street in New Orleans East. FOX 8 reported that the case will be updated as more information becomes available, and no further details about a suspect or motive have been made public.
A Pattern of Violence in New Orleans East
This is not the first homicide to draw police to the sprawling New Orleans East neighborhood this year. In June, a shooting in the 7800 block of Sand Street left 21-year-old Corey Williams dead and two others injured, according to the same report. Officers responded to that scene before 6:05 p.m. and found Williams suffering from at least one gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
That case saw a break earlier this month. NOPD announced on October 16 the arrests of 20-year-old Kris L. Maxwell, 23-year-old Giann C. Nelson and 20-year-old Samil Smith on allegations of second-degree murder in connection with Williams's death. All three men were booked into the Orleans Justice Center, per the same report.
Homicides Trending Toward Historic Lows Citywide
Saturday's death comes even as New Orleans has been on track for one of its safest years in decades. Crime analyst Jeff Asher told Axios the city is on pace to record its lowest number of murders since at least the 1960s. As of early July, New Orleans had recorded 33 homicides for the year, down from 39 at the same point in 2025, according to Axios.
Police data cited by the outlet shows ongoing decreases in carjackings, homicides, nonfatal shootings, rape and sexual assaults, and robberies over at least the past three years. Saturday's case underscores that even amid that downward trend, violent crime has not disappeared from New Orleans East, and investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened to the man found dead on Treves Street.
