A man was found dead on the side of Larkin Valley Road near Windsong Way in unincorporated Watsonville on Saturday evening, and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is now investigating his death as a homicide. Deputies responded to reports of an unresponsive male at approximately 6:59 p.m. and discovered the victim in the 500 block of the road, already deceased.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office opened the investigation after deputies responded to the scene, according to The Pajaronian. The victim's identity will be released only after family members have been notified, and as of the latest update, authorities had made no arrests. As reported by SFGATE, the sheriff's office is asking anyone with information to contact dispatch at 831-471-1121.
The scene drew notice from neighbors even before official details emerged. Local residents reported online that law enforcement officers temporarily blocked Larkin Valley Road in both directions near Windsong Way during the initial response Saturday evening, according to posts on Reddit.
A Rural Corridor Between Aptos and Watsonville
The incident occurred in an unincorporated area of Watsonville.
That rarity is borne out in the numbers. An official monthly statistical report from the sheriff's office recorded a 12-month violent crime rate of 1.68 per 1,000 residents across unincorporated Santa Cruz County, compared with California's statewide violent crime rate of 4.31 per 1,000 residents in 2025.
Sheriff's Office Handles Both Investigation and Coroner Duties
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death, while the Coroner's Office is handling the victim's identification.
Lookout Santa Cruz reported that drug-overdose deaths in the county are on pace to fall for a third consecutive year, with 20 deaths in the first half of 2026, compared with 36 in the same period of 2025 and more than 130 in 2023, according to Lookout Santa Cruz.
For now, the central questions in the Larkin Valley Road case remain unanswered: the victim's identity, the cause of death, and whether the homicide occurred at the roadside or the body was moved there afterward have not been disclosed. Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the sheriff's office.
